Hello all,

new here to the forum as well as keeping fish. Always wanted them just never took the plunge, but recently I got a 20gal tank and currently cycling it with a few zebra danios in it before expanding it.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I would recommend doing a water change of over 50% daily and keep up with water testing. Then stop after two weeks and see if ammonia and nitrites stay 0

So I haven’t done a water change yet wanted to wait a couple days to let it start up, but I’ve been doing 2-3 water checks daily and everything is staying lvl so far. Was gonna do my first water change tomorrow.

thanks for the info, but I had already looked through all of that before buying my tank. When I went to get some additional supplies the person at my fish store is actually the one 3who told me about in fish cycling and talked to them for a good bit before deciding to go this route

This can be deadly though. Leaving the water unchanged for multiple days in a row in a small uncycled tank can lead to ammonia and nitrite poisoning.
This "fish in" cycle should only be attempted by people who know what their doing. Many beginners wind up giving their fish ammonia burns using this method or killing them.
There are fishless cycling options and many people at a store just want to quickly sell something to someone.

That’s why I’ve been doing multiple water checks per day. At this point the lvls are all at zero and it has been about a day and a half maybe two days since I started. Also added bacteria to start and the tank is live planted. The people I talked to at the store are all aquarium hobbyist not just random people off the street that work there and spent quite a bit of time with me going over the issues that could arise and what to look for and what I needed to do to have the best outcome.

Ah ok. I'm glad to hear that! Seems like you have it under control.

Yea this is something I’ve been after for quite sometime and not looking to hurt/kill fish so I look into stuff quite a bit before jumping Into anything I do
That is refreshing to know... I hate it when people just go to a store and get everything at once and don't even research it... So so cruel to the animal

Great news, many folks just follow (bad) advice from the LFS that tell them to change their filter once a month and all will be OK.

Welcome! Enjoy your first tank.....there will be more...

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

You only need to test the water once a day. There's no point doing it several times each day.

I wont lie I have done that before and lost the tank, was only going to a local chair store and they didn’t offer a lot of advice, then made a new friend who has been keeping fish for 20+ years who helped alto plus also moved to a better shop with more knowledgeable staff who don’t try to rush you off or just to buy something they sit and talk over things with you and really help break it all down

for sure my wife and I are already planning a 50gal tank once this one settles and we can get the routine and maintenance down and maintain a healthy tank.

Welcome to TFF

What kind of test kit are you using? What kind of water conditioner?

As mentioned above, fishless cycling is much less stressful on fish, and on fishkeepers, as well...but it can and has been done many times...just takes much more effort than fishless cycling
