Nano Reef Diary... Updated 18/06/06

I can get R.O. water from work, although I don't want to cart hope bottles of it... And the thought of plumming in an R.O. unit doesnt seem possible at the moment.

I haven't used it so far and it all seems fine. Just used water conditioner to get rid of the metals and am using carbon in the filter which will help some.

Ben

hope someone hasn't already said it but you don't have to plumb the RO unit in.

how else would you get enough pressure to run it? it needs to be attached to the main water supply somehow, and before you say "use a tap", no.

Ben :)

personally i would never use a tap to feed an RO unit. A decent unit comes with a pin that pearces your copper pipe and makes a seal around it, from which it drains water under pressure.

Ben

I would use RO water. Tap water is asking for trouble and algae. I use RO and it works fine.

You shouldn't get too much algae if you prepare the water properly. I use tap-water on both my nanos and havent had massive algae blooms.

Alrite Ben :)

Your tank is looking great!
What are your nitrates and phosphates out of the tap?
What do you mean by preparing it?
Thanks
Dan

When i say preparing the water, this is what i do... I use a high powered tap which is a good way to get rid of some of the chlorine and other gasious chemicals from the water. You should be able to smell the chlorine coming off the water. Then i leave the bucket of water to stand for an hour or two. Sometimes i use a small powerhead with a bag of rowaphos attached to remove any phosphates from the water.

Here are some new pics..

Left side of the tank coming on really nicely, mushrooms and dwarf xenia at the top doing great!

Bi-Colour Blenny i got to replace the tail-spot blenny that i had. They didnt seem to do too well in the tank and i suspect that is down to not having enough algae for them to graze. The Bi-Colour loves TetraPrima so i feed a small ammount of that once a day and it seems to be looking great!

Rescued this one from work. It's a small leather mushroom, not sure exactly which kind. It wasnt coming out at all in the tanks at work so i got it really cheap and it started to emerge after being in my tank for 24 hours.

Got this lovely rock of mushrooms from a shop near me. It came with a surprising hitchiker which i believe is some type of mussel although i havent found it on the internet.

And my Orange Gorgonia which seems to be doing well also..

Nice Ben...very impressive that you are keeping that gorgonian alive considering it's not photosynthetic. Good work. SH

well ben,

I saw 1 whole pic of your tank. None of these new pics are coming thru for me here. I will try at home. I do want to know what you call the Pussey coral though. Can you send me a link for that pic in a PM? or just post it again...

thanks,
TB
