I have two nearby fish stores. One is a branch in a garden centre. Huge range of fish, they do marine fish and the more rare (pah terms) fish such as arrowanas etc etc. But they are too far away but they quite good.

The one I use is Pets At Home, which is very good. Okay, the staff aren't too knowledgeable, but I have books and the internet and this forum. I can do my own research. The fish are always healthy looking and if I have a problem with a fish it is dealt with straight away. (dead/sick fish).

Pets At Home took over all the Petsmart stores in the UK, and it is 100% better since the changeover. I'm not even gonna put imo, because imo it is fact!
I disagree sailfingirl
When pets at home took over petsmart there wasn't a 100% change at all
Simply because you can't just sack staff so in essence the problem that petsmart had with almost pre-pubesent experts was simply transferred over to pets at home.
It may well not be the case now or a little into the future because time has gone by since the changeover but you have to understand company's like that with the "stack em' high, sell em' cheap" philosophy will usually employ student's or young people who may be willing but are not experienced enough to advise people like us!
The only way to deal with this is to hire staff who have experience in keeping fish, birds etc... rather than just someone who needs a job.

I say give any potential employee a written test on the subject the same way people have to do that american history test before they become an american citizen. This way the whole industry/hobby gets a much needed boost.

As you can see I am very much a newbie.
I have a question for k-holed and JAE1525 as they live in Manchester, uk. I have found a LFS in Urmston, but I feel that they some times (especially the assistents) cant be bothered. Could you recommend a good 1 please, or 1 I could try out????

My name and shame would be for all the fish selling stores in the town centre in Exeter.

South street aquatics (the artist...opps I mean the store formaly know as fish r us) can not be less helpful (to the point of being rude) if you get the reputation of 'window shopping' ie looking at what is availble and (god forbid!!!!) actually going home to research the fish rather than making a purchase everytime you visit

Animal Kingdom is the best of a bad lot but has 50% of its tanks on average on quaratine at anyone time which suggests an issue to me, and gives no information consistantly to new fish keeper on the cycling of a tank, let alone fishless cycling

and the store opposite them....that I cant remeber the name of for the life of me, that sell dyed fish, have such disgusting state tanks it is sickening and you can smell the store from the street, and seem to have never heard of the idea of removing the dead!!!!

On the plus side there is a NICE little store in ST Thomas down one of the back streets near the petrol station, ? shaftsbury rd I think

That one in Byker you were on about isnt all that bad. It's the nearest "proper" aquarium if you leave out the garden centres and that. The people aren't too helpful unless your spending money i'll agree with that. But, they did do me a class deal on a jewel rio 180 set up so I'll let them off.

I've never seen any dead fish in there - the tanks are bare, but I guess its just a holding pen really isnt it? Apart from that they seem ok.

I havnt bought any fish from them yet. the tank I have now is stocked from pet world or whatever its called. When I first started out i had problems with my water - I didn't realise at the time cos I was just a beginner. You know how these pet stors have a 7 day guarantee or whatever, well, my fish died within 7 days so i took them back with a sample of water. They reckoned it was fine and gave me replacements whihc kept dieing. So i decided to go to a proper aquarium shop. They tested my water (at a price) and showed me how f*cking awful it was and what to do to put it right.

so, they've helped me out a canny bit. ;)
