My New Marine Tank

Interesting info there.

The live rock was cured and was run for 3.5 weeks without any livestock. Water changes have been more like 15-20% thinking about it as they're 19l each time (size of the bucket).

Flow wise i have (what i think is) plenty. 2 koralia 1's and the eheim canister flowing - the canister is full of live rock rubble and there is no foam or bio balls.

I'll have to get the skimmer set up asap i guess but the pump is huge and the tank is not!

FYI, 10% waterchanges are pretty meaningless to the system, even if done frequently. Since you have no livestock in the tank I'd reccomend 100% changes.

Second, cyano is a really tough one as it can fix CO2, and Silicates directly to get energy in addition to the traditional sources of nitrate and phosphate. Also you may be encouraging it with your lighting choice, what color temp are those T8 lamps?Changing to a more white or better yet a more blue lamp would help in this regard

Thanks for the reply - thing is I don't have enough space to do a water change that big at the moment. However, I have my crabs, snails and a cleaner shrimp in the tank...

I'm not sure on the lamps -I'll check tomorrow.

Thanks,

James

Not for long you wont

:good:

Make the room for big water changes or it will end in tears

Thanks,

Rigth anotehr little update.

Stats:

pH: 8
NitrIte: 0
NitrAte: 5-10
Amonia:0
sg: 1.026

In other news the cleaner shrimp molted last night :D - I assume this means my water quality isn't that bad!

And finally some pictures:

The lights are on but I've had them off since sunday and have just had them on so i could see and they're back off again now. As you can see the cyano is lower but that's mainly cos i cleared a load off during a water change.

Seffie - big bucket/bim bought and is currently 50% full of RO! Hopefully ready to change tomorrow night!

well done Jim, looks like you are getting on top of things - have fun with the huge water change :good:

Actually shrimps/crabs almost always moult in new tanks. It's theorised by many that it's the result of changing iodine levels as the levels in our tank never match those of the LFS or the Sea. Either way, the common fresh moult seems to be normal :)

Right bit of advice.

After the water change and new marine bulbs it looks like the algae is on the return.

As the water stats are fine and the skimmer is working well and pulling out a lot of brown gunk I can only think the source of this is the canister filter...

SO am I right. It's an eheim 2222 and both trays are full of live rock rubble...

Thanks,

James

I doubt it is the external canister filter to be honest. I haven't read through teh whole thread so sorry if I repeat whats already been said.

Large water changes, as mentioned do a few really big water changes to knock that nitrate down.
Better flow - I would say X2 korillia 1's was enough flow but maybe you might want to check their positioning as it could be you have dead spots of low flow in the tank. Maybe a couple of small power heads will help.
Surface movement - Make sure you have a good amount of surafce movement to help the gas exchange and make sure you dont get high CO2 levels in the tank (this helped my Cyano problem quite a bit).

I still have cyano in my tank at the moment (though not as bad as it was). But I think I havent completely killed it off yet just because I have hardly been at home for the last 3 months to do regular water changes.

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't think it would be the canister as lots of people have said the live rock rubble works well!

I'm doing another water change this weekend (prepping water over the week).

I do wonder about the koralia's. During the ater change it appeared as if one of them was flowign backwards??? A quick fiddle with it and it seems ok now?

I have the eheim spray bar agitating the surface which keeps the CO2 at bay and i have the widnow open as much as possible!

I'll have my first fish this weekend so keep watching for some new pics :)
