My Marine Journal

I really hope you are going to prove me wrong, but I think you have been to hastey putting the hammer in, your tank is not muture enough, its not happy thats why its not coming out, it might just need time to acclimatise to your tank, I hope so :good:

PLEASE LISTEN to what you are being told, you where advised not to get the hammer but you still got it

Marine tanks need patience, if you see something you like, put a deposit on it, your LFS will keep it for you untill your tank is ready.

I don't mean to sound rude, but if you carry on like this, you will, most likely kill your corals and any fish you purchase before long. Its an expensive hobby, you don't want to spend your hard earned cash on things to watch them die, please slow down.

Have a look at this little bit of info. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=...78&aid=2319
Have you tested your calcium and Carbonate Hardness/Alkalinity yet, if not I'd advise you to get these 2 kits asap.

fleabay has these 2 salifert kits at a good price :good:

i am listening to what i am being told i have been told lots of different things and i read from a number of sources that it is a great begginer coral although it is highly agressive. no i havent tested for calcium and carbonate as i havent got the tests and neither do any of my lfs. i hope i can also prove you wrong i only plan on keeping one or 2 small fish so the chances of my levels spiking dramatically is slim. i am only planning on getting polyps shrooms and maybee another leather so are them kits realy neccesary. i also may invest in a small protein skimmer. Here are some pics of the tank today. i did end up moving the leather and he seems much happier with more space

here is my tank yesterday

and here it is today

still not sure on the fish i am going to have in there. would a fire fish be ok in there

a fire fish on its one would be fine. IMO

i would invest in the protein skimmer. because IMO your marine fish keeping is about looking after good water, and ensuring everything is good. buy these kits from charter house aquatics (good prices) but if you are lacking in a nutrient or element (which i bet you will be. what salt are you using?) you will need to top it up as the hammer has a skeleton and it needs calcium etc to grow.

you need the following kits in total:

ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
PH
KH/alk
calcium
magnesium
phosphate

anymore peep's?

when you run out of the API test kits, switch to salifert. theyre cheaper sometimes too! and more accurate!

youve got to slow down or your tank will crash if your not careful. dont buy any more corals till it stocked. and if you want a firefish, i would keep it at that.

could anyone advise a protein skimmer. also i have not got a clue how they work as it has never came accross my mind for getting one. what does it actually do. thanks

look at the link i gave you. loads of people including myself use them on small tanks, theyre cheap and very good!

they remove proteins and disolved organic compounds.

the water is driven up the centre, and air is injected and it creates micro bubbles, they rise up the chamber and burst just above the collection cup, the gunk in the bubbles when they pop, collects in the cup.

ok it was in a PM wasnt it. but where does it go in your tank or does it go outside the tank. i dont realy want a big bulky machine in my tank haha

if you buy the one i linked in a PM it will go in one of the chambers. take a look on ultimate reef, as some people have this tank with this skimmer.

Good to see hammer settling in :good:
Yes you really need the test kits, water chemistry is important and as you have an LPS coral you need to check your calcium levels, they need it for their skeletal growth. Having said that, as long as you do regular water changes, it shouldn't be to much of an issue as you only have one.

Yes a firefish would be perfect for your tank

It's a .net ;)

Magnesium is probibly more importent than Alkalinity, which in turn is more important than Calsium. Calsium will only remain good if Alkalinity is good. Alkalinity will only stay stable if Magnesium is good. If Magnesium drops too log, Calsium and Alkalinity precipitate out, often crashing a tank if it contains fish.

The Test kits and suppliments are needed if you are keeping hard corals of any description

All the best
