London Olympics

How do my friends across the pond feel about hosting the Olympics?

it effects everyone either directly or indirectly. It's not effecting me directly, yet, but we feel the backlash of these actions due to lack of staff throughout everywhere.

Boris was laughing his head off though...

Personally i thought it was the best opening ceremony of any sporting event i have seen. Danny Boyle deserves a knighthood for what he achieved.

and just one more thing, i loved this touch....

To be fair it's not so much sacking as just not replacing people who are leaving in order to cut services, and making the working conditions for staff more and more intolerable until they either put up with less money for more hours, or leave the NHS entirely, thus avoiding the need for actual sacking.
The government has finally worked out that the best way to stop spending money on the NHS is to make a barrier on the number of patients every hospital can take in. A hospital with 600 beds costs more to run than a hospital with 400 beds.

I take back what I said about the opening ceremony.
It started off a bit slow, & I was disappointed, but just got better & better, well done Danny Boyle & everyone involved in it.
I loved the subtle touches which I've now found out about, such as the 7 billion pieces of paper representing the 7 billion people in the world, inspired!

The_lock_man, I agree it did brighten up at the end but that was at 12.45, would you really have paid £2,500 to see that,I don't think so............

Am watching the Cross Country on the edge of my seat! Jees! Its been interesting so far!! We are doing really well though! Sitting in 3rd/4th position so far.

If anyone is interested... our 3rd rider Zara Phillips is about to go!!!

I'm watching that too; it is very exciting. Isn't the course beautiful?

It is but a real waste that they couldnt sort course properly because they chose to have it in london. Plenty of excellent courses out there already!

Zara did great!! I think GB are the only team to have 2 clear rounds and in time so far!! :good:

has anyone been seriously hurt yet? That event always has a nice collection of You've Been Framed style moments by the end of it.

I think so! Its been very slippery, been at least 4 or 5 falls, one they didnt film and the guy was disqualified (AUS), Japan? i think got right to the nd doing bloomin well then fell and his horse was very lame when limping away, one woman got carted off in an ambulance and stopped riding for about 15 minutes or more. And others have got up and walkd away. Irelands first rider fll, rolled and his back protector inflated and he was furious though it was to be fair... his fault. More horses lame than riders hurt tbh.

Coming to the last of the third set of riders and GB are leading by about 20 points :) Germany sitting second. Forgot the others lol. Think Australia are doing well and they have Mark Todd to go who is one of the best riders. We still have William Fox-Pitt also one of the best to ride today.

Will be a great video in slow mo of rider hitting a topiary tree before coming off :hey:

And another of a grey horse (forget who... germany i think!) going far too fast on slippery ground and as they turned left the horses backlegs went right but manged not to fall somehow, was very impressive but he was riding badly and ended up missing a jump and his chance of winning.

No one has been for a swim yet :shifty:

lol! No-one's come off in the water jumps yet, AFAIK; they're always the best!

There have been quite few falls, but these days it's an automatic elimination if the horse falls, so there are a lot of people out already. There's only been one serious fall; Hawley Bennett-Awad of Canada; no news on how she is yet :(

But all the horses are fine, which is the most important thing :D

Whilst i think some jumps look a bit odd, they are very cleverly designed! With the chess, the big ben, the canal boats, the flower gardens, the cricket ball, the market stalls... all very beautifully english!

My favourite is the Wind in the Willows, the first water jump! The meadow grass up the sides of the water and the barge jump is very pretty! Some great photos coming from that jump too.
