It is also a really good way of getting to know people with similar fish - therefore an excellent way of getting help and advice when needed.
Its just an Oscar orientated thread, for Oscar lovers, for those wanting to know more about Oscars and for us Oscar clubbers to enjoy pictures of other members Oscars and occassionally *cough* go off topics without getting shouted at

My lfs has an oscar for sale its about 4 inches for £8.99, is that cheap, average expensive. Its an albino with only a few orange spots [they usually have quite a few orange spots?]

My guppies could rip your full grown oscars apart xD :HAHA:  :p

 i dont doubt it for a second John  that one in your sig looks very capable lol

yeah that price is about average, certainly not too expensive, its when you go to smaller shops that the prices get silly, my LFS in Dundee had 2 that were fully grown and he wanted £99 for them.. one died after a yr as they were so old anyway, but no one wants to pay that for "run of the mill"oscars, then again he had a stunning albino pair for £150 and i would have had them, but i didnt have room and when i did go back they had sold
on the other hand my Bo was £15.. but i would have paid £50 for him- just a case of cheap as the guy needed the space backand he wasnt exactly in good shape but he didnt know that :/

a wild caught oscar would set u back a fair few quid, stunning fish, usually a lot bigger and greener in colour, and a lot more aggressive too

i think your slowly being converted arnt you ?? :shifty:

( between me and you john, i have a tank full of beautiful guppie fry- not show class of course, but they all mean as much to me as my oscar does- but sssh its a secret ;) )
They probably feed your monster oscars

I'm not being converted :look: :p :shifty: I'm only 12 lol... I'm still getting a rio 125 set up in my room before I can even think about oscar tanks... they're quite big [compared to my tanks anyway]

Also, if albinos should have no pigment and pink eyes, why do albino oscars have orange spots...?

So there are 3 types of oscar?;

tiger - wild?
normal
albino

a lot confuse albino with lutiino oscars, and most are cross breeds, when nelly comes online ill ask him to post you the thread to a guy in poland that keeps true lutinos and you will see the difference, ive only had one white/orange as i dont really like them( there eyes), but Day Day was an exception , he was cute, i wish i could get another oscar but i just dont have space at the moment :( and wouldnt upset Bo by trying anything new with him

tiger- red /black
red- mostly red bodied (bo)
lutino
albiino
wild
long finned
prob a few more too but im no expert i just enjoy mine

and nooooo i never ever feed my oscar live food- certainly not fish ( i did try meal worm once but was sqirmish)

I love the look of grouch [NaughtyT's] & your bo x. Also, does that mean you can get oscars like grouch with even less orange spts [say 10-15 each side] as I would love one on its own in a rio 125 till I could upgrade, how fast do they grow.

The Oscar in may avatar has hardly any pigment - tiny orange bits on each side and black edges to fins is all. He's about 7" now and getting a bit more colourful as he grows.

????

Just (finally) moved my 2 O's into the 6ft tank and the black one (Shadow) has gone like the one I lost in there a while back - cloudy eye, excess slime coat, raggy fin edges - got to be stress as it was starting as soon as he was released :dunno:

The other (Ghost) is hopefully just sulking - laying on his side and gasping a bit :(

Water stats are as near identical to the tank I've moved them from as possible (no ammonia or nitrite, nitrate around 30, temp 27deg C)

Hope it is just stress as don't know what to do if every Oscar I put in the 6ft keels over :(

Give them time to settle down, but its strange it happens whenever you move them into this tank. I think it is as you say, just a stress reaction. Keep the lights out for a few days and hopefully they will settle down.

I've even given the tank a huge overhaul since last time - cleared out the gravel, scrubbed the wood, added a couple of tall fake plants....
Even done 2 big water changes over the last week to make sure it was perfect for them!

I'll keep you updated...

Thanks for the comments folks, grouch really is a stunner, but ever so shy,as soon as we got near his tank he is off under the filer playing dead, churchill on the other hand is at the front as soon as he sees us,waging and begging for food,he even hand feeds, even if he does mistake the fingers for food sometimes LOL

Hope everything settles down for you indigoj

Quick update, Shadow and Ghost have both made it through the night. Ghost looks a bit raggedy but generally ok but Shadow looks really bad. Both eyes fully cloudy, fins look awful :( thought he was dead and was starting to fish him out then he moved! Fingers crossed!

That doesnt sound right, ok, so he didnt like the move, but this is an extreme reaction.

I would do a w/c see if that perks him up a bit.

I know you have cleaned the tank thoroughly, but it there any chance something could be lurking in it? Was it a new tank or second hand? What did you use to clean it? Is there any plants hanging over the top? Im just trying to think of a reason to this reaction of Shadows.

I've had the tank for about a year, it was 2nd hand. Filters are an fx5 and an aquaone 1200.

Other inhabitants are 2x Kissing Gourami and a 16" Clarias who have been in there about 6-8 months.

I did have a columnaris outbreak which is why I have taken so long moving the O's over - tank was treated with 2 courses of myxazin then. Since then water has been changed about 50% a week and everything has been cleaned.

Thing is Shadow started to deteriorate in the bag while acclimatising - as soon as the first drops of water (literally a splash) went in.

He is swimming round ok (considering), responding if I tap the glass and is upright rather than laying down most of the time. He just looks awful. I've added a dose of esha2000 to combat any infection.

Going to do a water change, and add an internal filter for more surface movement.

(to clean the tank I just use a scraper sponge and water changes - no chemicals at all)

Dont know what else to suggest then, keep up the water changes and hopefully he will calm down. Let us know how he gets on :)
