Jack's Marine Adventure!

Ya know, after all the reading I've done...lol here I go again.

It's come to my attention that probably every tank has ick in it. All it takes is one little tiny drop of water from an infected tank to put it in our tank. Even if we QT fish there could still be the free floating stage in the QT tank that could hitch a ride to the DT. I'm not saying not to QT unless the fish comes from a respected source as QT will ensure that the fish are eating and they're easier to treat should they need treatment. Just saying that probably any tank has it lying dormant.

Again, sorry about your troubles Truck :( Too bad any of this happens to anyone.

Its certainly the case in the freshwater world (don't know for certain about marines), but yes every body of water will have ich in it. but it only affects fish if they are not well/stressed anyway. This is why it is commonly present on new introductions as they are stressed from the move and are therefore more prone to being affected.

some fish are inherently more susceptible (clown loach in FW, and seemingly powder blues in SW).

Could of course be completely wrong if someone knows different then please tell me.

i don't know exactly what a UV removes, does it kill all bugs and beasties?
if so then no i wouldn't run one on a new system as you are trying to build the levels of these bugs/beneficial bacteria etc. up.
running a UV will only lengthen the process.

i imagine that it would be a good idea to run the UV just before and during the introduction of a new fish so as to kill off some of the background pathogens, to limit the chance of a stressed fish getting ich.
more important in my opinion is to stress the fish as little as possible. This means a lengthy acclimatization period into a stable and mature (parameters wise) system.

IMO, UV in a home system is a waste of money and potentially dangerous.

If you are running it constantly, you reduce the fishes immune system strength, to a point where they pick-up infections more easily if stressed or the UV is removed completely for what ever reason (hardware failure, warn out lamp, disconnected from the power, lamp crystal is dirty e.t.c). Remember, UV does not kill all parasites, it just reduced their numbers, fish can still get infected in a system running UV, as there are still some parasited presant, but not usually enough to maintain a strong immunity to the parasites

If you are not running UV, you wasted the cash on the unit, that could have better been spent else where.

If you are finding you constantly need to run UV to keep your fish health, something about your care is not good enough for the fish that keeps getting ill, or something in said fishes environment is stressing them. In this case, it would be better to work out what is causing the problem, rather than running the UV and keeping a stressed fish in your care

UV has it's uses, in QT is one example, but only for the first week or two, and in shop systems to name the main ones, but for home keepers, you would really be focusing on keeping healthy fish healthy through good care :good:

thanks for your input everyone.

i wont frequent here as often as normal because of the situation and i have decided to pick up where i left off with a british n gauge layout. anybody else into modelling railways?

Truck please don't get dis-heartened, you are a valued member of this forum, and even though your tank will be fallow for a while, you still have a lot of knowledge and assistence to give, I really hope to see you keep posting :good:

Don't know much about n gauge model railways, but I'm a train driver instructor, does that count

You'll be back. Once a fish keeper, always a fish keeper. After your time modeling railways, you'll find new enthusiasm :good: Before or after moving out though, that is the question... Reading between the lines, I'm wondering if your mum's taken a dislike to your marine fish keeping hobby

I have several boxes of train sets upstairs, not looked at them for ages, but used to spend a lot of time with that stuff...

All the best

I put my N-guage layout to one side roughly when I got my tank......planning to pick it up again in a few months when I get some more inspiration....

oh cool! what locos are used to train people with now? are they the likes of the class 220's for the passenger lines or something like a 66 for the freight stuff? or is it all simulated these days?

norbert has shed his skin, i will be back ;)

You learn on the Trains you are going to drive and over the routes you are going to cover. Simulators aren't really used that much. I teach Class 357 traction unit, which are passenger trains :good:

Way to go norbert B-)

agree with everything Trod said, we don't want to lose you Truck

And - Trod is a very rare breed indeed - a female train driver instructor
