Jack's Marine Adventure!

yep

i would happily QT all stock (the LFS were meant to have Qt'ed them but they cant be doing it long enough!) but its just the case of 'your not turning my house into a bloody aquarium' i mean, what harm is a 30 litre tank?

Even after you proved them wrong and got the credit note? phew

I would do as Aaron says, put it in the wardrobe.

No, they cannot be doing it long enough, such a shame, keep going, at least you can add corals in that time. Good Luck Truck, you sure could do with some.

yeah, she still thinks im wrong even after i proved them wrong.

Lol good idea, she would soon find out and kill me though

corals will be going in, and i may upgrade a few things and add actinics

sad to hear about your deaths truck, im not sure if this applys to marines really but i was reading a pfk article that was suggesting that the fish of today are nothing to the quality of what they used to be, becuase of inbreeding, it said all of the colourful little fish- neons, guppies etc are now really weak due to inbreeding, it was suggesting for people to try and get wild speciminins or gouramis, and barbs i think.... i know for myself that the stupid guppies die like anything, could this be similar for any species in the marine trade?

i wouldnt think so, but buying wild caught should be avoided, theyre hard to keep and native fish populations are dwindling

oh, lol-- good luck anyways

does a quarenteen tank have to be relevant to the size of the fish being kept, you mentioned a 30litre, but up to what size fish could you quarenteen in this and for how long until stress digs in?- I am wondering wether to qt my new world cichlids when i get them, it will be either 6 juvi firemouths, or 6 juvi convicts- never done QT before and i rekon i have suffered from it

30 litres should be sufficient for most small marine fish

Well, I'd point put to your mum that if there was a water quality issue, the corals would be first to suffer, not the fish. Also, point out the e-mail to her and say. look. even that shop's test kit maker says the kit is inaccurate for marine water... The cap ot off by saying the issue is parasites, that could only have come in on fish from a shop, so it's dodgy stock that's caused it :good:

I'm sorry to hear you've lost both clowns, they should really have taken a long while to succumb to whitespot

However, WS, either FW or SW, can and will often move this quickly or faster through a tank

All the best
Rabbut

the clown goby has just passed away :-( :rip: he was my favourite fish and i will be getting another once ive finished going fallow.

so back to planning, its looking like this:

1 clown fish
1 yellow clown goby
1 six line wrasse
1 purple firefish
1 banggai cardinal
1 fireball angel i will choose something else if it isnt compatible

what are peoples opinions on mixing a purple firefish and a fire ball angel? i dont think it will work.

The count down begins here- 56 days and counting.

i know i have an isopod or two in my tank, will they starve in the 8 weeks of fallowness?

and seeing as my bacterial colonies are going to dwindle; when i add more fish (one at a time) it is going to cause a spike right or should there be sufficient bacteria? im worried my live rock will turn into dead rock...

:rip: Clown Goby

I can't see a problem with Firefish and Flame Angels, but then marine stocking isn't my forte, so get a second opinion on that... :good:

I can't really answer your question on Isopods, as I don't know their life cycle well enough

For maintaining your live rock (and CUC) while the tank is fallow, just add small amounts of food. This, along with the small bacterial die-back will keep the tank ticking over and safe to add fish to at the point of re-stocking :good: If you don't add food, you'll still have some bacteria left, but you would risk a spike after 8 weeks being fallow  A mini-cycle would be likely in that event, but it would be over with, certainly within a few days.

HTH

cheers rabbut :D

i will do some research on isopods and look at their life cycle, if it means doing it for longer to kill them...I will

can someone right a post stressing the importance of quarantine please? as im trying to explain to my mum that it will stop anything like this happening in the future. and how do i go about it? just a bit of live rock taken from the main?

dear jack's mum,

your son is a very nice chap! He has taught me everything to know about saltwater and freshwater; he is a living aquarium. I think you should let him set up a aquarantine tank to save future expenses and future upsets incase other fish pass away =(, think of the quarantine tank as the vets... if you had a dog you loved and it was ill, you wouldn't keep it at home you would take it to the vets to be quarantined =)

Im really sorry for your loss mate =( i hope things start looking up for you!

Bagu

Lol, cheers bagu :D

i have to run my tank fallow for 8 months in order to get rid...stuff that!
its a good job im including a six line wrasse, they have a good chance of eating these little buggers!

please excuse my ignorance here mate ...

But what happened to kill you livestock? is it these isopods? :(
