I actually started 2 years ago with my first 29 and even before that I enjoyed my dads various tanks. He used to breed guppies in a 20 and take the worst looking males and oldest females and they became a snack for his Cichlid community. He has had Jags, Oscars, Sunfish, Red Devils, JD, Green Terrors, guppies, mollys, platies, cories, and I think he had Gouramis too.

my family has had fish since 1998 when we moved to california (2000) was the last time i remember a fis tank, o my god you people would have been mad at me forever with what we did with that thing. i think it was 20-29 gallons with 2 angels, 5 Tiger barbs, 2 gouramis, tire track eel, fiddler crab, african knife, fire belly newt, and a bala shark (for 2 hours). i killed the angels (on accident before i found out your not supposed to take fish out of water and poke it, i was curious) we had a gold gourami and i think 3 spot and they had a baby ( i know, but when we left on vacation there were only 2!) sadlythe crab got the 3-spot, the 3-spot got the baby and the gold, dog got the tire trackeel, filter killed the newt, crab became a snack for the knife, knife was a tank suicide, tigers got flushed live when we moved in 2002 ( again,i know.) now that that train wreck was gone and we had no more fish til 08, then i made the mistake of letting the seemingly intelligent petstore dude tell me to get a 1 gallon fish bowl with no filter or anything, and put 3 gold fish and 2 balloon mollies plus a mutated bull frog tadpole i got for free. lasted 1 month. then started with my current 20 in 1st day of summer 09, screwed up by stocking to early (petstore instructions day after return date on fish expired i found this site :X) by putting 2 dwarf gouramis, weather loach (hence mojo dojo), 2 hatcets and 3 ghost shrimp. shrimp lived. got 3 gold barbs after the tank cycled with the shrimps. my balloons next. 2 more barbs. my raph. sold wrong fish of 2 turquse rainbows instead of bosemani so i retuned them day later, set sites on praecox. now i have had them for 2 weeks and i finally learned my lesson. 1st job will be to replace the stronzo of a worker at the petstore to warn people using my painful story. (can you work in 2 rival petstores at the same time? hired not actually present in both places)

now that im looking back, i feel bad this many fish had to die on account of 1 person to learn their lesson :-( , i just didnt have a clue what was doing.

oh yeah and we also had dyed indian glassfish in the train wreck too (guy lied and said they were really colored like that despite the fact that they each had different colored parts of there body.

now i dont even touch the tank except to lift the hood to feed and clean without consulting you guys.

I voted 15 years, but its nearly 18 or something like that, on and off, started with a coldwater set up just before or after (cant remember which) by 1st son was born, everytime we've moved since, Ive given up (sold up) and started again after a while. My parents used to keep tanks when we were small, so there have always been fish around, my elder brother used to keep tropicals and my younger brother kept Marine for years. I guess we are a fishy kinda family.

apporaching 2 years for me now.
i joined here first i think, to do plenty of reading up so i never had the goldfish in a bowl stage

looking back at pictures its amazing my tanks now compared to what the were at first. soo much more complicated and yet beautiful. planted is definately the way to go :hyper:

have had all sorts of tropical tanks since i was a child. went marine in college by default- went to college and got a degree for marine science and worked for 4 years (was in charge of them in my last year) in the specimen lab. about 100 tanks of various marine species. everything from sponges, seahorses, horseshoe crabs butterfly fish, clams, macro/micro algaes(including cultures), pipefish, lobsters, many crab species, many shrimp species, lookdowns, hogfish, puffers, skipjacks, even spiney and smooth dogfish(my personal favorite) just to name a few. had my fill of the salty side and back into tropicals on a MUCH smaller scale :)
cheers
