My female has been in my quarentine tank for a few weeks re growing her tail, she was doing beautifully then this morning she has lost all her colour and has a white layer of film/slim stuff over her back - she looks desperate!!! what is it n how do I help save her!

What was your maintenance regime while she was in your QT, what meds if any did you use? How big is your QT, is it heated, filtered? Did you do an immidiate 50% water change when you saw the problem?

She has been getting just 50% water changes every other day, in a 15litre tank on her own, no meds or filter but consistant at 22 degrees, ive just done an immediate. 50% water change now, I can go to the fish store now I just dont know what I need.

Note its all red around the white patch and I think its Columnaris :(

Have you tested the ammonia level in your tank? Depending on how much you fed, or how well you removed organic waste you could have high ammonia levels that caused her to get sick.

I don't know if it is columnaris, if you can't check the ammonia have the LFS check it or do more frequent water changes and see if it makes a difference in her condition. Sometimes all the fish needs is fresh water to heal herself, without the use of any meds.

I have taken some pictures;

It looks like she is splitting in two

My ammonia -if there is any it is so low it doesnt registered on my liquid test.

I have added some aquarium salt I got to about. 0.3% as it says on the box,

I also got Myxazin and Protozin because I dont know what it could be Myxazin says its for Fin Rot & bacteria and Protozin says its for whitespot and fungus but it does say it has copper sulphate which I read is good if it is columunaris.

The question is what do you thinkit is and what do I use to help her!

Gee, that looks bad! I think you are right in your diagnosis. I've looked it up and found this site (I hope it's OK to post, so if not, mods pls remove)

http://www.petfish.net/articles/Diseases/columnaris.php

It says in there to lower the temp to 75 - 76 F, since high temps promote the cycle of the bacterium, which would be bad, you want to slow it down!
Have a read through the article, there is even a picture that looks similar to your Betta's condition!
I hope you can get her well again!!!

As i agree tge high temp promots the growth of the illness it also helps by making the lifecycle go fast that with a little added salt kills the fungi ( the white film would suggest a fungi even tho the diag may be flexy bac) so i would wak the temp up anyway also mainly cause bettas like it hotter then 22'c

Also op 80'f is about 28'c :) this temp is a compramize as a bettas immune system runs better at this temp then at 76'f

According to the article the white film/slime is exactly what causes a possible misdiagnosis of fungus infection. The reason to lower the temperature is to slow the progression of the illness to give the meds more time to take effect.

A temperature of 24 C is warm enough for the Betta, yet cool enough to help cure the illness. I think it has gone beyond the Betta's immunesystem's capability to cure this, and to give the meds a chance, I would recommend to reduce the temp to 24C.

Im gonna try the Myxazin then looking at her fins they are ragged so im guessing its columunaris, I hope it works

Can someone reccomend a good and quiet external filter for my 260 litre tank. I have a internL fluval u2 and u3. I also have a some plants that constantly make mess. So when it comes to cleaning my filter out. It all ends up back in the water as im taking the filter out. Im looking for something in the price range of 40 to 80 pounds. I plan to keep my u3 ajd replace the u2 with an external one. Please only recomend something if you have one! As noise is very important for me. It must be ultra quiet because noise bugs me and isnt good for the fish.

Hi beanz8,
Have a look at this thread:
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/387025-fish-emergencypic-included/page__p__3252225__fromsearch__1#entry3252225

It doesn't seem to be the same problem as yours but Tolak has given some really good sounding advise, and I'm wondering if it would also be applicable to you. Maybe you would like to PM him and see if he could have a look at your thread to tell you if it would be something he would also recommend to you!
