my temp is ranging from 25 to 27 is this ok i think my heater is messed up. just added more salt i think my tank is 120 liters because i have used all my salt and it said it can do up to 120L (4Kg). thanks razer i think at the end of this journal i wil say what is good and what is bad about the tank and all the other equipment i have used so people can learn about all the things i have used and what i have kept. also i will give people links to web sites wich will help people. :good:

Hi Harry,

Remember not to add any more salt until all the salt at the bottom of the tank has completely dissolved. Testing the water will result in an inaccurate SG reading (or give you an accurate reading of what the SG is at that point). Adding more could push it way beyond the desired range 24 hours later when the salt has completely mixed and mean you have to empty out saltwater and replace it with RO to bring it back down again.

If your dad has an ebay account, ask him if he could buy you a set of pocket electronic weighing scales. You can get them for around £10 and are accurate to 0.1g. All you have to do then add 35g of salt for every litre of water you add to the tank. This saves soooooo much time and effort and allows you to be much more accurate with mixing the water up.

If you're doing a water change of 20 litres, simply measure out the 20L into a bucket using a container that has a known volume (old coke bottle, measuring beaker, etc). Next measure out 700g of salt (20 x 35g). Allow to mix thoroughly and test with your refractometer. If all has been measured out correctly and the mixed well, the reading should be 1.026 (providing your refractometer is calibrated accurately). The scales also come in handy for calibrating your refractometer. 100ml of water with 3.5g of salt in it gives you a solution of 1.026. No more splashing out £5 a time for calibration fluid ;)

i have added more salt and the sg is now 1.025 but not all the salt has dissolved. all the salt was dissolved before i added more salt.

ok all of the salt is dissolved now and the sg is 1.026 :D  im adding 15kg of live rock on saturday :D carnt wait

Let the pet rock watching begin - woo hoo

ps choose your rock carefully :kana:

LOL. I actually really enjoyed just having the rock in my tank alone. It made me really look closely at what was going on on the rocks. All the tiny creatures running around and things growing on it. That's probably what got me into macrophotography.

how long do you think it will take for my live rock to cycle if i live 20 mins away from rce (my lfs)

When I bought my live rock the LFS I bought it from was only 4 miles away, took me 10 - 20 minutes to get there dependinging on traffic?

I transported mine in bags with the tank water in them and my tank took 2 - 3 weeks to cycle?

I think that time it took was becasue it was reletively new to the store and had only been curing for 3 - 4 weeks before I bought it.

I would take a bucket with you and ask your LFS to bag the rock with some of the tank water?

i should have read the instructions better i forgot to bed in the skimmer. but yester day at 11am i started to bed it in so i think 2 moz it will have beded in. do you think i should start off with 3 cirth and 3 nassiuras snails soz about the spelling. or just get 5 of each? my cuc will be
2 peppermint shrimp
1 cleaner or blood shrimp
5 cirth snails or 3
5 nassarius snails or 3
2 blue leg hermits
1 pom pom crab
1 halloween hermit is this one ok? soz about this you proberly all ready told me about my cuc list a millon times.

can you have so much live rock that you dont need to have a skimmer.

A skimmer and live rock perform two different funtions. LR house's bacteria that feed on ammonia and break it down into nitrates evenutally. The skimmer basically removes some of the fish poop and other dissolved organic compounds from the water before it breaks down and becomes ammonia and phosphates, the latter being something that the LR will have no effect on.

ok thanks. :good: me and my dad are thinking about a sump later on. i will convert my 40L tank into a sump. oh yer just forgot happy new year
