knee deep in fish poo
just was looking at my fish and noticed that the quartet of obliques that i got about 6 weeks, one is holding! it is so cool seeing as i did not think they were even matured or in the least bit interested in mating. but she has a mouthful now. think maybe she did the dirty dead on thursday cause i thought that maybe she might have been but was not sure. but she sure is!

yeah me!

Maggie,
Most liekly your fish is a Hap. 44 redtail or a hap. Thick skin. Obliqs. are extinct and most times these get sold as Obliqs.

they are pretty good breeders. Once they get going you got a good breeding pair / colony. They are NOT as bad as convicts but they will produce several spawns. The eggs are small in comp. to most vics which means spawns are normally large in size. On a small female you may get anywhere form 12 - 20 fry. Larger adult females can produce up to 30+ fry in a single spawn. But again this depends on the size of the female and the experience raising fry.

If this is the first spawn I would count down roughly 14 days and them remove her. Once she is moved to a diff tank she will release the fry if they are ready. If you let them realease in the tank chances are the adults will chow down. Depending on the water temp the fry should be mature and ready for realease between 12-14 days. If you look closely under the chin you will see definate eyes at first then followed by tiny fish bodies.

This is most times viss on female fish that have lighter chin colors. Some adult female Haps. display darker chins which makes it alittle harder to see the fry whne they are developed.

Good Luck and keep me posted,
Danny

well she is going to be inthe thirty by herself. moving the other three to another thirty today. she looks like a zebra with black and silver vertical stripes. her chin is light colored. man, here i thought that i did a great accomplishment! she is small for her size out of the four. that is why i was surprised that she was holding. i think one of the others might also be holding. has a small double chin right now. she is probably only about 1 1/2" possibly 2". will try to get some pics of her tonight when the others are out of there.

You did great. Any fish you manage to breed is an acomplishment. Hell I still get exited when fish breed that just bred. Even when I got tank fulls I still get exited and feel i have acomplished something fishie. :fun: :fun:

From past and present experience once victorians start to breed young they are normaly good breeders and will breed like mad. At a later age they kinda slow down on the breeding yet still produce. On the older ones that started breeding later they go on to breed longer and just as big of clutchs. Did I loose you ? Kinda rambling now my head is spinning, kids are driving me insane. :-( :hyper:
