That tank looks really good, AND TIDY!!!! My planted tank is currently a mass of some feathery plant thats about to take over the world, and hair algae  ! That tank is looking really good!

A bit off topic for this thread but i also really liked the picture of the tank you showed in your article in the latest PFK magasine. Very stylish with the desk lamp, I could see that on my coffee table, very nice!

Ha ha  yeah thats mine, look at my signiture and you will khow how it was created.

Thanks everyone.

MHunt - That was Moody's nano tank. A wonderful example of aquascaping on a small scale. I do not have the skill to create such complex layouts, a simpler style suits me better.

Thanks George, what a guy :good:

Although your tank is a simple design it is very effective. The quality of the plants goes along way to create a fresh and vibrent layout. Im a complex guy so I like complex layout, although i do really like your nano, like i say its fresh and vibrent with a calming simplicity wich makes it work very well. Im aliltle aprehensive about your trimming, what is your plan? Its going to be like a hair cut, to much in one go and its going to take time for it to grow out. I know your trying to get a final shot, so be careful with those scissors.

Top stuff mate.

Bloody show-off
Yep. There's definitely an element of that. I also hope to promote aquascaping too.

Graeme - You complex. Me simple. ;)

No worries on the pruning, I chopped it at steep angles to thin it out so it doesn't look artificial. The riccia was a joy to prune too, much easier than I expected.

You bring up a good point about plant quality. If the plants don't look good then no amount of skill can do justice to an aquascape.

I love the pictures, George. Sorry I'm late to comment, but I had the flu last week and for once wasn't thinking about planted aquariums.

The tank is gorgeous, and it is really coming to its own. I especially love the "hand" photo, very funny, but I have a question. Why tear it down? I don't really understand, the tank isn't really very old at all. If the tank is stable and beautiful, and the fish are doing well, why put them through a tear down? I don't know, it's just not quite what I aim for when aquascaping. When I look at my scapes, I'm looking at their potential a year from now. I guess I am very patient, and perhaps work with very different tanks from yours. I wonder how long you could maintain that scape with just pruning and normal tank maintenance?

I'd just hate to see a lovely thing torn down.

Thanks L, I hope you are feeling better now.

Why "tear it down"? I am away from home on various courses and other personal circumstances dictate that I simply don't have the time to maintain such a demanding/high-growth layout.

The hairgrass is bursting now, getting to the stage where it is growing over itself so it all needs taking out and re-planting. The riccia would need pruning every week or so and eventually need re-attaching to the stone. One could maintain this forever if so desired, as with most aquascapes. The work required to do so is the deciding factor, that is obviously dependent on individual set up (planting, lighting etc.)

As much as I love this aquascape it is simply too much work with my present situation.

I also get bored of a scape very easily. I think the longest I've had is 6 months. For me the planning, growing and photographing of an aquascape is one of the main attractions. We have my daughter's tank for a longer-term project (that's doing very nicely too).

What you doing with all the plants and fish? Some quality plant stock in there at the mo, you can be chucking it away?

Sam

It looks stunning.I got all the stuff I need to try a similar one today.I got a bag of flora base as a substrate and some hairgrass and I have everything else I need already.Cant wait to set it up!!!!

Thanks for this thread its inspired me so much!!!

I know what you mean on borde of a scape. My longest probably hasn't even been a month, considering I've barely had the 38 gallon for what... 2 or 3 months?

Fish will remain. Plants donated to a friend.

Thanks to you too. All the best with your set up.

Meadow Reflections

What do you guys think, better with no ripple effect? I like the peacefulness of the reflection and stillness. I feel it suits this aquascape.

I was stripping this down this weekend in preparation for 2 weeks away from home, but my course has been postponed. So I should be able to get more photos next week, when the riccia carpet has formed a really solid mass.

I've been running a 4 hour photoperiod now for 2 weeks. No trace of algae anywhere and the plants are doing fine, if a little overcrowded amongst the hairgrass but it's fine for photo/viewing in the short-term.

....Straight off to ADA Aquascaping contest with those piccies then!

I agree, water calm.....

Andy

Beautiful! This tank has done so well. The riccia carpet has created a lush dense carpet. Nearly looks like its only on one piece of stone instead of 6.
