Forum Improvement Idea

In this case I don't really think there are any helpful suggestions. If something is potentially good in theory but can't really be applied in pratice, then as has happened in this thread, all you can really do is suggest various pros and cons of an idea rather than something tangible.

Besides, surely the initial issue is whether the forum software can actually support anything of this kind?

the only thing a "trusted Member" or "resident Expert" title would do is, massage the ego of the recipient. the first time someone, disagreed with the advice given, by said member. the trouble would begin.

whether any, advice given is good or bad. you can research any answers, given, yourself, finding the truth. (isn't that what everybody does, after they are given advice?). if people cant be bothered to do that, no amount of "forum expert" tags, will help.

I accept it may be hard for new members to work out who is knowledgeable, and who is not. but if they stick with the forum, the answers will become clear. if they cant be bothered, to do so. is it really up to the forum?

I think regular visitors to this site already know who the trusted members are and who it is sensible to listen to when asking for advice on our hobby. I think if the 'trusted member' tag was going to be used it should only apply to a minority of people who genuinely give good advice, that said most of the people who I would apply this tag to myself are mods anyway, and are by definition are already senior and trusted members of the forum.

I think a youtube style rating system with thumbs up and down to rate good or bad individual posts like pointless one liners or seriously off topic comments may serve a purpose to point readers to genuinely good advice (although still subjective). But having a ebay style reputation syste, is definitely frought with more problems than the mods and admins want to have to deal with.

The question is how many people have been offered a Mods post and turned it down as its too big a commitment. I in no way think they should be handed out like candy, but I can think of 3 or 4 people who aren't mods but are obviously vastly more knowledgeable than a lot of us, and not only that but clearly spend a long time writing long and well thought out responses. - Nor do I think that any of these members are the sort of people who will become big headed as a result or won't listen to other opinions.

It'd just be a nice way of letting theses people know that they are valued here.

just imagine if you " fell out" with a rep.. could ruin your reputaton.. nar keep it as it is.. a good idea would be to bann IP addresses of idiots :) but then again thats a non starter as they would just use another one.
feed back on sales tho is always appreciated by members.. sellers and other prospective buyers, a simple arrived today and is fab at the end of the thread is all thats needed.. and of course if your not happy take it to pm to see if it can be sorted out that way.. if not we all want to know about it :)

Never mind rep points, when can I see General Chat again?

==Potentially on topic==

The one forum I occasionally look at with rep points has some people that actively seek out red blobs (the negative response) purely as a way of rebelling against the usual race to gain some sort of satisfaction that having some strangers on the internet who will have (almost) no impact on your real life saying well done brings some people.

Maybe we should have a Board suggestions bingo card:

Can I be a mod?
How do I become a mod?
When is General chat coming back?
Don't you think the forum has changed recently and we are all too nasty?
Can we have a points/rep system?
I couldn't log on for 0.5 seconds, has the site fallen over?

;)
