Football Banter/discussion Thread

Preferred starting lineup (group stages):

Hart - no competition
A.Cole – dislike but still Englands best LB imo
Jagielka – Terry is too slow on the turn
Lescott – these two (J&L) have an understanding
Richards – should be in the squad at the very least by now
Wilshere – playmaker
Parker – protecting Wilshere and defence
Gerrard – still one of the best around
Walcott – come a long way this season
Welbeck - more to offer then Bent
A.Young – better then the rest

Squad players – P.Jones, Lampard, Bent, Johnson, Downing, Oxlade, Smalling.

Definitely leave at home – Terry, Barry, King

And need to take Rooney, it’s be stupid to leave best player at home, despite a 3match ban.

Well if your taking Smalling and Oxtail-Chamberpot you may as well remove fat frank and replace with Tom 'Zinadine Lionel' Cleverley

id rather have Lennon than Downing. it seems all of our 'quick' wingers are painfully devoid of the ability to consistently hit our own men with crosses, but for pure pace and man beating ability Lennon is second only to walcott. i think id rather have adam johnson than downing aswell.

You've got 3 central midfielders and one winger. Just won't work, IMHO.

I think Fat Frank is an experienced European type player, wouldn’t write him off just yet and we’ll see how Cleverly does second half of the season….both he and Oxlade if playing games and showing form, would take both ahead of Frank, yes.

Not sure what Smallings got to do with ur point tho...

True, Lennon has improved this season for Spurs, but never had an end product imo, used to just runs down the wing and aimlessly crosses it in the box, wouldv worked in the 90s but don’t get many goals like that now (see UTD).

Downing isn’t much better and wouldn’t be first team for me, but he does have a sweet left foot which might give better balance, and would be a useful substitute for that reason. Johnson if playing games and in form I’d take ahead of Downing.

Pace is overrated, technique is underrated (see Spain).

Three central midfielders, one striker and two wingers in Walcott (right) and Young (left)…form closer to the competition will be a big bearing (A.Young is on the slide).

UTD only have themselves to blame, Rooney’s open goal miss was terrible and conveniently being ignored by the media.

A little bit of Tevez out the door. A little bit of Vidic on the floor. A little a bit of Nasri on the side. A little bit of Rooney shooting wide. A little bit of Mario having a laugh. A little bit of Nani on his #14###... Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Channel Number Five.

I have to say, gents, that as much as I think Alex Ferguson is a Grade A Twonk, I would still rather see a British team beating Johnny Foreigner.

So funny at work today, with 3 Liverpool and 1 Arsenal supporters in the room, every mention on the news of Man U dropping out of CL or Vidic we all cheered, made my day multiple times

Only the Arsenal fan has a leg to stand on, Liverpool didn't qualify for Europe full stop

one of my mates at work, a Utd fan, was very decent about the whole thing, except when Livepool fans started ripping him. as you say, they arent exactly covering themselves in glory right now. they're not in europe - even stoke and fulham are in europe - and they still arent even above the mighty toon in the league.  and they bombed 35 million in a much less useful way than Sir Alex would have done  . if i was a liverpool fan id be keeping quiet.

have to say, from what ive seen citeh fans are at least being very philisophical about it. their first attempt, hardest group, and of the other 8 groups, their points total would have got them qualified from 7 of them - bad luck. they have a big enough and good enough squad to easily win the europa league as long as they take it seriously. Utd are going to be trophyless, without doubt. i was saying to my utd fan mate today, i know its only xmas, but fergie needs to write this season off with regards to winning anything. much like england at the euros, fergie needs to use this season to blood his youngsters and get them reguarly playing. getting cleverly playing every game could improve him to the point where fergie maybe doesnt need to spend 30 million on a new CM. same with replacing creaky old Rio - with vidic out now, get smalling and jones playing every game possible together at CB - ok so they might get shown up for their inexperience a bit, but we all know fergie and england will reap the benefits, again it will stop him having to splash out another 30m once rio retires.

ive got a feeling evans will get in before smalling does though, and that is absolutely criminal. evans is pure sunday league.

as a man utd fan in merseyside i agree with that LFC fans using this europe exit and the city defeat to paper over the fact their club is a shambles at the moment they are going sideways desite all the cash spent and how long is it 21 yrs?????

Vidic is a huge loss but I dont agree Rios finished hes still a class act whos body is creaking and as we saw with rio and vidic being together they just dont let goals in. Evans is rubbish so for me get Jones back in defence leave smalling on the right and invest in midfield in January

as for england in the summer I cannot stick Walcott what a useless player in my opinion. Adam Johnson I really rate and I disagree with Terry he has to go and Id rather see him in there than Lescott who played well against spain but for me not dependable. Id still take lampard as hes still a class act but hope that Oxlade who looks a more intelligent player than walcott gets the chance to shione between now and then and could be the wild card style pick for the eursos

:S like we wanted to be in the Europa league anyway lol, rather concentrate on domestic comps bar the champs league, had a awful start to the season last season, more of a lack of faith in Roy from the players, Gerrard missing a penalty on purpose etc, youtube it, look what happened when Kenny came back, still managed 6th, and of course Liverpool fans have a leg to stand on when its to do with Man u lol.

Also i strongly disagree Liverpool is in shambles atm...lol, start of last season yes, but to be fair, we battered Man U was just unlucky, Battered Chelsea twice away and Arsenal, more then held our own against City who won what vs Man u? theres only been a few of the matches this season i've been unhappy with, results aside, last owners ruined the club the turn around is happening. Just need all the hitting the posts to turn into goals and this stupid thing against 'lower' clubs to go away and we will have a happy ending to this season. Carroll was maybe a mistake will make my own mind up at end of season though, was mostly profit from Torres anyway so just a bad investment of profit, maybe.

Also don't tar all fans with the same brush, my step dads united and i ain't said a word too him, as he doesn't too me, each club has fans who take the Michael more than others and get involved in the banter rather than realizing whats actually happening on the pitch.

when Utd overtook Liverpool on league titles, the fans hung banners off motorway bridges near Liverpool with "19" on them..

I do hope they keep this tradition up and hang ones with " 3..... and we can't overtake you till 2015 at the earliest" now....
