Fluval Spec Work In Progress

Cheers mate. They do seem to look much better after settling in. I wish my Nerite would stop climbing on the leaves though it's uprooting them.

Evening All

Just a small update I've got another tiny piece of wood/twig soaking that I'm going to cover with some spare moss and a couple of spare Java fern plantlets and pop in the tank maybe in the front right corner.

I've also decided I'm going to try and cover the pebbles with Riccia, when it arrives I just need to decide whether to use the hair net or cotton method of attaching it.

Since this is becoming a Journal I wondered if the mods could move it into the planted journal section?

Cheers

Jon

Hi,

Great looking tank, I look forward to seeing the progress... not seen one of these before

All the best,

T'UK

Either pm a mod or use the report button and ask for it to be moved Jon. And maybe ask them to delete your other thread. :good:

New plans sound good mate. I used cotton for my Riccia, but the hair net sounds good too. Never considered that!!

Mod pm'd.

Hopefully I will get the new bit of wood in later so will post a pic when I do. How often do you trim your Riccia is it a messy process?

Cheers

My Riccia is pretty slow growing due to an old bulb so i haven't had to trim it. I just leave it to do whatever it wants... which, tbh is not alot. lol. It was messy attatching it though so i guess it would be when trimming it.

Here's a quick pic showing the twig in place with the Java fern and moss, it's being held down by the pebble at the moment as it still wants to float.

I think the pic also shows how well the moss is growing especially on the branch at the front.

how come i missed this one??

Looks great, and when that moss takes it will look even better! Just bare with the moss as many can take an age to take properly.

Thanks for the comments :good:, the thread started out in the Aquarium Photos section and was only moved into here yesterday, that might be why you missed it.

Evening All

My Riccia should arrive tomorrow I've got a golf ball sized clump coming so should have more than enough for what I need, question is shall I put in on the pebbles and pretty much leave them where they are, or remove 1 or maybe 2 of them and put it on a bit of stainless steel mesh just behind the small twig? It would be much easier to tie it to the mesh using the nylon thread method and would probably be easier to get in and out for trimming if/when I need to.

Another question, do you think it would pearl under the standard Spec light if I used something like Flourish Excel? or does it need much brighter light and proper CO2.

Cheers

Jon

I doubt it would pearl from liquid carbon...

I would cover the rocks rather than use meshing also. :)

I don't think it will pearl due to the lighting, my HC pearls in my 1 litre with excel but that's because it has like 6WPG lol.

Cheers, I didn't think it would but thought it was worth asking, I might even give the Fluval mini CO2 kit a go at £22 for the kit then £13 for 3 disposable bottles it seems reasonable value and the small initial outlay fits well with my limited budget I wonder how long a canister would last? Surely in such a small aquarium it should be at least a month? But then I've still got the light as a limiting factor.

With the Riccia I might do 1 pebble at the front and the mesh behind it, I'll see how much is there and have a play around.

Cheers
