Do You Have Plecs?

I like to think of Plec's as hidden gems of the tank. Like my L202 for example, I don't see him too often but when I do it's always pretty cool :good:

James.

wow this is pretty split down the middle. I'm divided and see everyones point of view but am coming round to my OH's way of thinking. My 4 Ancistrus Rio Ucayali potentially take up 20" worth of space which could be taken up by either a nice shoal of tetra (got my eye on purple/silver emperors) or I could increase the numbers of what already lives in there.

Chances are though once they were gone I'd miss them :-(

No true plecs for me currently (although I do have 3 Hypoptopoma), but that is more down to my preference towards African catfish from the Synodontis genus (decora, brichardi, nigriventris, congica, Microsynodontis polli), more than anything else. Having said that, I would love to be brave enough to give Chaetostoma (Rubbernose) another go and success stories like Tizer's 3 C. milesi have helped boost my confidence a little.

I love them. Think they're great to be honest. I really don't care how often I see one in my main tank, it all adds to the factor of knowing they're there but having to really look or watch them when the lights are off and there's very little room light. None of the rest of my family likes them though. The first time my youngest seen one of the plecs in the tank she screamed and started crying.

My daughter aptly named my firstly bristlenose 'ugly' and has continued to refer to them as 'the uglies'

My 3 rubbernose plecs are ace, very amusing little fish to watch. I dont think i want any bigger plecs, mostly because they would ruin the plants and the poop factor.

Do these dig in sand much? I saw some of these as Juvis recently, marked as Bulldog Plecs, but kinda interesting, and not too big.

I recently rehomed two common plecs as they literally strung poo through my plants, over decorations, and dug huge craters! Otherwise, have far more character then monst other fish i have kept, lots of Personality!

I keep 4 bristlenose plec and love them, they're active and fun to watch.

When I get a bigger tank I will likely pick up a more impressive specimen.

Just a quick thought but I'm interested in how many people DONT have plecs and their reasons for it. I'm thinking that some people don't bother because of how invisible they can be. I have 4 Ancistrus SP Rio Ucayali and they do come out but not as often as my other half would like. She thinks they are messy and take up space that could be used by a species more pleasing on the eyes

what do you guys think?
no because they go bat#105### crazy and knock everything over.

i use otos =] i love the little guys allways busy

i like plecs, ive had a few, at the moment ive got a rusty, a flash, whiptail and some sort of tiger/king tiger or something, cant remember the exact name. they are messy, and it shows in my tank, but it just means i have to put in a bit more effort to enjoy my great looking plecs.

they never dig :)

I have a sailfin L083 and I enjoy having him in my tank. Nice patterns, pretty active and is often out and about. If he is messy I can't tell, maybe because the Rena XP4 really does a great job on the 75 gallons. I wish he stayed at his current size of about 8 or 9" but I know he'll outgrow the tank and force me to upgrade for him and my clown loaches.

I also have one rubbernose/bulldog and I wouldn't mind having 3 or 4 more. I can't always find him but he is constantly doing work to keep my tank clean.

well after a lot of thought, I've sold my Ancistrus Rio Ucayali.

I decided that my experiences and the comments regarding how often I see them and the amount of waste they produce just didn't suit what I want. I have a 5 year old daughter who loves the tank and the other fish and would appreciate other fish more than these.

Now the search starts for their replacement, possibly corys, loaches........where to start

flag tails are nice and active if your tanks big enough

Ooh corys, nice and active for a five year old watching. And my favourites, so I'm biased.
