BigC can you give me some tips for using the putty, every time I use the blooming frags fall off. After looking closely at your pictures I think that I am not using enough

:fish:

ps - boy your tank is looking pretty

Are you using D&D Aquascape epoxy or Milliput, pretty much the same really, except the D&D stuff comes out purple. OK break off about an inch of each parts and rub them together for a good period of time untill it becomes all one uniform colour (no streaks) then once you've done that leave it down for 5 minutes or so, (it will become more tacky) then use it for sticking your corals down. Get a dry cloth and semi dry the place on the coral you wish to stick the putty (quickly) then straight to the point you want it to go. Push it into position firmly and knead any access putty round and up the base of the coral. You may need to use quite a bit depending on the size of the coral involved.
Hope this was of some help

P.S. I must have the clumbsiest pair of mits in the business when it comes to positioning frags in a small tank, so if I can do it Sef, you certainly can.

Top notch BigC. I have to admit last time i saw this thread it was the part where the siliconing the back wall with biorb media. Mygod its stunning, love your cat and trachy!

Can you give me a spec and maintinance of your tank?

Cheers

Well that seems a long, long time ago. And various folks are attempting the same idea and improving upon it.
Can you give me a spec and maintinance of your tank?
Okay!
Tank is a standard self made 24x12x18 all glass tank (with sliding coverglasses to keep critters in) Drilled with 25mm overflow into 20mm drain.
Sump is a small 12x12x18 all glass tank with 3 compartments
1st compartment intake chamber holds Carbon and Rowaphos.
2nd Compartment houses Cheato algae and my Nano Skimmer
3rd Compartment contains small frags and LR and that dreaded Pistol Shrimp.
Return pump is an Eheim Hobby 1250 pump, which sits outside the sump due to space limitations
The sump is lit 24/7. I now culture Rotifers and Copepods in vessels alongside the sump. Next to the brineshrimp hatchery.
The main tank has a aragonite sand bed to a depth of 50mm
Live rock totals around 30kgs maybe a little more.
Lighting is provided via 2x 55w T5 Interpet Power Compacts (1 daylight, 1 daylight/blue) & 1x 36w T5 Internet Power Compact (daylight/blue)
Alongside the Eheim return pump 2x Maxijets complete the circulation job (1x mj600 and 1x mj900)
CUC is pretty extensive for a nano and comprises of the following as of today
2x Cleaner Shrimp
Snails:
4x lrg Trocus
4x Star Astrea
8x Jumbo Cerith
3x Tongan Nassarius
Crabs:
4x Blue legged
3 Red Legged
The fish population numbers four
2x Common Clown (starting to show signs of spawning behav.)
1x Royal Gramma
1x Yellow Watchman Goby
Corals: Gee where do I start. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves probably around 30 varieties.
Maintenance is upped a little of late. Before I was only doing 1x 12 ltr waterchanges whereas now I perform 2x 12ltr waterchanges per week. I find the inhabitants enjoy this much better and seem more vibrant. I draw all water from the sump and dont disturb the main tank unless I really have to.
I add Two Little Fishes C-Balance twice weekly (2x 5ml medicine spoons) again via the sump
I guess I've become a wee bit lazy with the testing side of things of late only really performing a full batch of tests once a month. I sorta can see when things arnt just quite right now with constant observation, then I would get the testing kits out.
I test for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Alk, Ca, Mg, ph, phosphate. and thats about it.
I have little log sheets copied from Bloozoo aquatics site. (pdf)
Feeding,
As I now have an SPS (would like to add some more) and a Sun Coral I feed the main tank the following food stuffs.
Live BBS, Live Copepods, Live Rotifers, PhyotoFeast Live Photoplankton, Frozen Cyclopeeze, Frozen Brineshrimp, Frozen Mysis Shrimp, Frozen Krill pacifica. Dry marine flake.
I make a point of starving the inhabitants at least one day a week, this makes them hunt for food rather than waiting to be fed a ready meal.
Cleaning:
I used to syphon in and around the wall from time to time but I now refrain from doing this as its alive with copepods and the likes so I now leave well alone. I use a magnet and some filter floss wedged between the plates to clean the front glass.
I think thats it really. It does take up a great deal of my time to keep it in shape but I enjoy doing it and problems are not as frequent now as they were in the beginning.
For the future I'm looking at incorp some reef bones, branching pieces (nice shapes) into the scape (cheap from a german source) perhaps after christmas. LOL and also to up the Copepod and Rotifer production so as I can maybe distribute among friends and forum members.
Thanks for taking the time to view this thread and I hope it helps some folks along the way.

Ok before I publish the lates pics of the tank as it stands as of this evening complete with a new recruit.
I would like to take this opportunity to recommend a 2 disc DVD, which I have found to be one of the best around, There is no running commentry a la David Attenborough ilk, It is simply an Identification set which has been beautifully put together and I can honestly say you wont be dissapointed with the beauty and size of the production. I comes in a beautiful cover and also sports a nice little informative reference guide for easy navagation through the contents of the DVD.

your tank looks fantastic :good: I wish i could aquascape like that. I always seem to have problems with placement of new corals, guess its due to not aquascaping my live rock correctly.

Also i notice the sun coral you have, do you have much look with them? i have had one for about 3 months now and can not get it to fully extend whilst feeding? I have tried making feeding domes, pippets and all sorts with no luck.

Thanks Ben,
Hi Jonny.
Sun Corals are beautiful animals but require a little bit of work,
To train it to open when you want it to. Squirt a little cyclopeeze/live photoplankton mix over the coral and wait. It will open enough after around half an hour to enable you to feed it. I use a large syringe with a length of airline attached. I feed each polyp every other day. I feed cyclopeeze, live bbs, frozen brineshrimp, frozen mysis and frozen krill. It will open like the pic below, but if you really want to see these corals in their full glory you need to have insomina. LOL

looks like your running out of coral room now...
:shifty:
big tank time :)

couple of questions for you,

quite fancy a dwarf angel myself. Whats the one you have like with eating and coral munching?Cant find much info on them only flames etc

Noticed you said your clowns are showing spawning behav, will you have a bash at raising them? would be a quality read that.

Hi Ben
Nah, not a chance of an upgrade, I'm having too much fun (if you can call it that) learning the ropes with this little spit in the ocean.
Corals settling now and starting to flourish.
This little Dwarf Angel is a real glutton, I feed it flake and lots of frozen type foods, Live BBS. My friend has one and he told me it dont touch coral polyps and to date, under close scrutiny, it dosent seem to bother. I'm keeping it well fed though. I need to get some spirulina algae flake into the larder though.

No real interest in rearing clownfish fry at the mo. They'll get eaten in the plankton stage anyhow.

Ben goes off to hunt down a Centropyge sp. LOL

Well guys I was always interested in culturing Livefood when I had the freshies, so I have transposed this habit over to the Saltie side and started to culture Rotifers and Copepods to begin with. I have set up two large plastic drinking water jars and run an airline from the pump into one then an airline out and into the other jar. I use room temp saltwater mixed to 1.024 for both foodstuffs. I'm feeding Live PhytoFeast to the Copepods and DT's Live photoplankton to the Rotifers. I'll post some pics of the setup later. I like doing a little bit of aquaculture alongside the daily tank maintenance, keeps the interest up. Bought a little USB microscope today cause my little handheld magnifying glass just wasn't cutting it anymore (poor eyesight due to the ageing process LOL)

Again I hope to get some pics and movies up from this aspect also. Should be interesting to see what results I get
Keep watching.
