Danny's Cycle...

my ph rises slowly once in the tanks, rising is better than dropping at least and your pretty okay ph wise, mine sits at 8.0-8.2 in the tanks.

Sounds like your nitrites are behaving in a more controllable manner than before though so don't panic, your doing great. :good:

Well my poor betta is in his tank with just gravel,, as Im trying to eliminate decor and plants from the nitrite issue. Changed it all 7am this morning and tested at 5pm the results hadn't moved from this morning, not even a teeny bit of a raise, so maybe it is one of the decor items......or it just coincided with the nitrite spike finishing, now that would be a pain, after all that work over the past 7 days of spiking...lol
Will see how it goes overnight, as the biggest jump in nitrite always happens overnight. If it is still on 0 readings tomorrow I will add one item back and test it for 24 hours, then add next one back for 24 hours etc, slowly putting it all back until I find one that makes it jump, if any.......though I did run the tank for 2 weeks without issue, just needed to try this to eliminate them once and for all................

Hope yours keeps going well, you do seem to be over the biggest spike, lets hope it continues to slow for you from this point on.

Will let you know my test results in the morning, if it jumps then its not my decor and can add it all back lol

Edited to add: Hubby just let me order a new tank, one of the arcadia arc ones 35 litre, so it will be arriving tomorrow !!!!! Im gonna do a fishless cycle (no way am I going fish-in again lol) on it then transfer my minnows to it as they are in a 25litre and will appreciate the upgrade. Then I will have a spare 25 litre........mwahahhahaha, more fishes, or snails and shrimp lol

Maybe I should keep an eye on my PH levels more then in future tests?
What would cause the rise? I know its only a small rise but would that not effect the fish?
Sorry... I just really am an amateur at fish keeping lol... anything I don't know I just panic!

Yeah they do seem controllable... just scared they are going to rise to 2.0ppm again and that was just a painful time for me lol!
But hopefully they do stay <0.25ppm :good:

I just find it weird that some decor could cause Nitrites... but hey what do I know lol!
My gravel seemed to be the problem for my 5.0ppm readings a few days back!

I hope my tank just hurry up and cycle's... Don't know how long my female can take with the male attention

Well good luck on the results tomorrow!
Will be on to see how things are. :good:

I didn't think decor could add to it either but I did read something yesterday about a ship ornament causing a nitrite spike.....I have no idea, Im so desperate I am trying to eliminate anything lol If this continues to be an issue at least I will be able to tell people in a thread that it's not decor and that I tried it all.......if it is decor then I guess once tank is cycled fully it may be able to better cope with the nitrite caused by an ornament? Who knows.....Im learnign just like you mate, real interesting journey though, loving every bit, apart from the stress.
Im looking forward to starting my fishless cycle when the new tank arrives, no worries about fish harm or water changes, will be a breeze compared to this.

I feel exactly the same as you!

I am loving the experience, but the stress is a killer

I have a 2ft tank ready for a filter and I can't wait to under-go a fish-less cycle! :)

The reality is that you'll get your tank cycled with the fish you want, and then the tests will drop to weekly intervals once stable. After that it might drop to monthly testing as your confidence rises. I've not tested my small 70L tank's water in months, be that an irresponsible thing (over-confidence) or acceptance of nature's stability.

Believe it or not since I moved out of my parent's house last November I've only done a handful of water changes as I don't get to return that often. So far so good. But it is a mature (read: over four years of stability) tank. Now I live with my partner and have a 400L tank cycling as I write, I'll be able to take in the fish from the old tank and expand knowing patience yields rewards.

*updated*

Seems to me that my Nitrite rises overnight, however it doesn't surpass the 0.50ppm mark.

Is this sign of progress?
Getting there. Did you ever buy the liv plants to help stabilise your results. If not, try to get an air stone in there or put about 4 oxygenating tablets in there every day or 2. A packet of 12 tablets at my lfs costs 79p but I know shirley do theres at about 59p

Yeah I did.

I have two live plants and an air pump in the tank now :)

Looking good Danny, seems to be staying under control, though we both would have liked to see it drop off to 0 after the spike.....it may be gone soon, keep going Hun.

I have started a thread about my tank and its nitrite issue, after 24 hours of only gravel the readings stayed static, no rise at all in nitrites..................have added one decor item back to see if this causes spike......

my thread is here so feel free to follow it Danny, we can continue to learn together lol

Andy, come on over too, I could really do with the support and continued advise.....
