Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

What about buying instant noodles? can you eat noodles @Colin_T?
There's no noodles in the shops and I can't eat them anyway because most have wheat in.

Is there a service like Amazon in Australia. Might be another source for nonperishable food.
Amazon doesn't sell food here, and their prices for some items are outrageous. There was a fish book I saw. It cost about $20 US and they were selling it on Amazon in Australia for $12000 AU. There are lots of other items on their site that are hideously overpriced like that.

On another fish forum we were talking about no toilet paper and using leaves, when someone posted this picture.

It makes sense for some inflation If it has to be shipped internationally, but that's outrageous!

is there Walmart in Australia...you might check with them for food.
Many supermarkets here are opening 5:30 Am till 8 AM just for people over 60.

We don't have Walmart here. There are 2 major supermarket chains (Woolworths and Coles). IGA and Aldi are also here but they struggle to compete with Woolies and Coles.

I have 2 Woolworths and 3 Coles stores in my town and all have the same problem. Basically idiots here are stock piling and shouldn't. They only need 3 weeks worth of food and supplies. One weeks food for the week we are in, and two weeks food if you need to quarantine yourself.

Latest news from Western Australia.
Apparently Australia has enough food reserves for 75 million people (our current population is 25 million). The problem with lack of food in the shops has to do with truck transport times. There is a law that says large trucks can only drive around towns/ cities between 9pm and 5am or something like that. This means the trucks are delivering food and groceries at night but they can't do deliveries during the day. And anything that is delivered overnight, is sold out within minutes of the stores opening.

The government is now rushing through legislation to allow trucks to do deliveries 24/7 until this crisis is over.

------------------
New temporary laws have put a limit on Pharmacies selling medications. There is now a limit of 1 month's medication, or 1 unit of medication per person. This is to stop people stock piling pills.

------------------
The Australian Federal Reserve Bank has reduced interest rates to 0.25% and is printing money (not literally). They are trying to keep the economy afloat.

No theres no walmart :)

Well...like I said in a previous post...get there when they open. Maybe even a half hour before they open as there may be a line. "The early bird catches the worm."

Apparently unemployment rates in Australia are around 5% now, but they are predicting up to 30% or more people could become unemployed in the next month due to the virus.

The Australian Prime Minister (Scott Morrison) is doing a live speech right now.

--------------
There will be a travel ban to Australia starting tomorrow. The only exception is if you are an Australian citizen or immediate family member of someone here. People coming here will be quarantined for 14 days.

Small businesses can get a special loan to help get them thru this.

Doctors, nurses and other medical staff have not got enough protective equipment to protect themselves or the patients. Apparently there is sufficient protective equipment but the doctors are apparently not getting it. Doctors say we don't have it, government says there's plenty of stock available???

Government is working to prevent banks from foreclosing mortgages and making people homeless during this time.

Prime Minister reiterated that people should not stock pile. Says this is going to continue for at least the next 6 months, so we need to work together. PM says we can do this if we work together.

That's it for now.

Well bad news in Western Australia. I went to my local shopping centre and it was closed. The chemist, newsagency, supermarket, everything was shut. There was a sign on the front of the supermarket door saying "sorry, closed due to no stock". I couldn't look for food, drink or get my heart medication.

I went for a walk after leaving the shopping centre and went along the harbour. There was about a dozen people fishing there and they had 2 undersized fish between them.
