Barney's New Marine Journal - 150l Upgrade.

Thanks for the nice comments :) I have hit one small snag, my clownfish has decided to host my mushroom and the mushroom REALLY doesn't like it. Not sure what I can do about it really. The reason I really wanted to get a hammer coral was to try and get the clownfish to host that (it did in the nano and both did ok). Eventually I would like to get a BTA but would like the tank running a few more months at least with everything staying stable before I do.

I was planning on putting an overflow box on this tank and then fitting a sump underneath. However my brain actually worked briefly yesterday evening and I realised it would be so much easier (and a LOT cheaper) just to build a stand next to the tank and chuck my fuge (that I already have with all the plumbing and pumps) on there. I'm rubbish at woodwork though so if anyone has any suggestions for a good way to finish it off that looks nice (but doesnt cost a lot) I would be grateful. The basic stand itself I have no problem with building. The fuge will be covered over with a door infront of it for access. Not sure what I will put under it yet. I was thinking of putting my orca under the the fuge as a frag tank or for a watchman goby/pistol shrimp pair but it is in the living room and I dont want it to look like a fish shop :) (though I probably will end up like that :) ).

To answer BigC's question I'm fairly happy with the tank so far. I did really want flasher wrasses or fairy wrasses but my LFS never have any in stock and taking time off work at the moment for deliveries isnt really an option. I do however love the fish that I do have in there so not overly disappointed. Cant wait to get more corals but lack of funds and again poor supply at the LFS near me is probably going to hold this back.

Couple of quick questions. In the fuge for the macro algae is cheato and LR rubble going to be the best options for increasing pod populations? For the people that set up a fuge mainly for pod "production" do you manually transfer pods from your fuge to the display tank or do you find they always find there way in there anyway?

The Tank is looking superb :good: I would love to be able to take photo's like that of my fish, maybe you could give me a few pointers one day ;) Great stuff.

Well I was bored tonight so like I normally do I got my camera out. Its way to cold and wet to go out though so decided to take more pictures of my tank (I love not having a bow front tank anymore :) ). Lots of photos below and there will probably be more to come (sorry if you all get bored but I'm still going to post them anyway :) ).

Clown fish:
She has decided to host my mushroom. The mushroom really isnt too happy about the arrangement though.

The neighbours are having a few issues with each other:

(The Royal Gramma's hole is just above the mushroom, they never do any damage to each other but they do make sure that they each stay in their own space)

Royal Gramma:
I love this fish but it is the most territorial one in the tank. I'm keeping a close watch on things and if it gets worse it may have to find a new home.

(unfortunately my tank is pretty old and scratched to hell as you can see here. Good lesson not to buy cheap magfloats!)

p.s. I could never get bored of looking at tank pictures...

Hi Barney,
Nice Pics.
I bought a torch coral (nem lookalike) and I thought my clowns would host in it. NO, Finger Leather, NO. They host in bloomin brown polyps.
I have a fanworm near by and they torture the life out of the thing.
Damm clowns.
LOL
Keep the pics comming Barney.

The mushroom seems to be getting used to it. It still closes right up when the clown gets really carried away though. The strange thing is that both the clowns used to swim together all the time but now the big one hosts the coral and the little one stays away most of the time. The big one has also been cleaning the rocks around the coral a lot so dont know if this is normal mating behaviour or if there are going to be issues with the two later on.

Have had some issues with some of my GSP too. its been closed for a few days after a knocked a powerhead and it caught the direct flow from it for a few hours. I have moved it to a different spot and it was half open when I came home but has closed up again now and im not sure whats wrong with it. I did think maybe it was to much of an SG change when I topped up but in the nano it would have been way worse than that and I never had any problems with it at all. All the other corals are fine as well.

I have bought some wood to make the stand for the fuge today so should have an update with that over the weekend (where you can laugh at my terrible woodworking skills :) ). Looking out for a cheap skimmer and Auto top up as well because at the moment Im sometimes away for a couple of days which means having to top up quite a lot of water when I get back (which cant be helping at all).

Hi Barney,
I had my GSP in full flow, big mistake, I lost quite a lot of it. Yeah the clown that hosts the coral is the larger one, the smaller gets kicked out into open water and if it comes to close to the host coral it is rebuffed qiute unceremoniously.
Cant wait to see your joinery skills

Well Despite the god awful weather today I decided to take a run out to the not so LFS's to see what they had. First one I went to still had the same stock as last week but the second one I went to had just got in a load of hard corals and where selling 3 for £100. Its the first time I have seen any good stock in there for ages so it would have been rude to not take advantage of it :)

So I came home with
1 Large Torch coral
1 Large bubble coral
1 fairly large trumpet coral

Acclimatizing them now but photos will follow :)

I also got a V2 120 nano skimmer which is doing a really good job now I have it set up right. I still havent got round to building the stand for my fuge and frag tank yet so that will probably have to wait another week again now :(

Well it cost me most the skin from the back of my hand (stupid clown fish really dont like me putting my hands in the tank) but all the corals are now in. The bubble is already fairly well opened up and just waiting for the other now before getting the camera out :)

Damn as Im typing this I now see the torch has fallen over... again!!! Sure the clown knocked it over just so it could get another taste of my flesh!
