Bargain Common Plec on Aquarist Classifieds

Ah cheers mate, will pop over there at some point and take a walk round ;)

Still no reply from the guy selling the Pl*c by the way !!!! :fun:

That ain't a common plec, not a Hypostomus at all. Count the rays of the dorsal fin, there's 12 or 13 of them. Hypostomus catfish have 8. My guess is some sort of sailfin.

Or Hybrid Common / Sailfin more likely ;)

smithrc - I'm afraid I am no expert of different species, but telling the families apart is fairly easy. Your fish has 13 dorsal fin rays, so it isn't a Hypostomus. Based on the general body shape and the dorsal fin, I'd say your fish is a Liposarcus sp. You could ask at for example the Planet Catfish forums if you'd like the opinion of someone more experienced.

*edit* - I just did a bit of a check and it seems that the species that used to be Liposarcus have nowadays been added to Pterygoplichthys.

*edit again* - I also found that some of the species formerly belonging to Liposarcus are also called common plecs in English. *sigh* Why the same common name is used for several different species in English I don't understand...
