An Accidental Jungle

Heh, the 'torch effect' is just from the cloudiness in the water reflecting some of the light from above.

Thanks for the further comments, more pics later in the week.

Actually, more pics now (procrastination central here!).

Some in situ shots now the water has cleared somewhat -

So haven't really done anything to this tank except hack back the HG when it gets too long. Added a trio of sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) this weekend, they're still too small to sex, hoping to get a pair out of them.

Lovely little fish, quick video of them hunting ostracods in the hairgrass -

^^^ agree, love that video!

You've inspired me to do a hair grass nano myself.

Cheers. My tip for hairgrass is to buy it from a nursery/garden center rather than an aquarium supplier. Costs about a tenth the price and lets you plant nice and densely from the start (might be a bit harder to find any in good shape at this time of year though).

Thank ill bare that in mind. Im guessing it would be sold emersed? Does it go through any change etc going submersed?

Yeah it'll be grown emersed, but so will most of the stuff you find sold for aquariums. Give it a good hard prune after planting and it should be fine.

Beautiful tank there Tom. I'd never heard of ostracods before, did you culture these for feeding your wee gourami? I recently got a group of sparkling gourami for my tank having never come accross them, and they are an absolute delight! Perfect for a nano tank

Cheers. The ostracods hitchhiked in on some plants that I moved across from my main tank, which is seeded with all kinds of inverts. I think they originally got in there by themselves though, had all kinds of things show up (including 2 inch leeches!).
