Absolutely horrid

yeah i got a free english lesson that i didnt even have to pay for :D, but i better go back to being the internet coward that i am :p

oh yeah about my email to them ....

every person that is in the fish hobby knows bettas fight but trying to make money off it is a sad excuse for a keeping fish as beautiful as them when they only show aggressive behaviour to their own species (correct me if im wrong) but ive had a male betta in with a community and he never bothered anyone and ive seen others

i only see one OK excuse for fighting...and thats to breed some nice stong men....none of the wussies...so that way people ain't buying weak lil bettas that die at the turn of a temp, or from a lil ripped fin or somethin...even though i do love my lil weakling, dragon.

theres no excuse for fighting bettas..

they dont wanna fight..

they are being forced to fight..

its animal cruelty

As long as they still respect the customs set ages ago, that the losing fish is taken out before too much damage is done, i have no problems with it.

Remember, when bettas breed, the males also damage the female. Why dont you protest against that? If you are talking about a fish's well-being, that is equally bad for the female.

Also want to add that, if they dont want to fight, they wont. No one is forcing them to. It is their nature.

P.T.

I think this guy over used his thesaurus...

A true despicable Internet coward - that's what you are. Hide behind the shield
of cover that this vehicle offers self-styled crusaders like you!

I don't know but to me when you fight dogs to prove that your the best your hiding behind your dog because your some skinny little man who couldn't defend himself in a real fight, so he compansates by fighting a dog... unless this guy practices the respecting rituals like people in asia and such I don't see how he's any different and he's just a coward hiding behind fighting animals. I dunno if you guys understood what I meant but eh. :D

Edit:

I don't know if bettas "love" to fight because some dog fighters use that as an excuse also. Saying the dogs wag their tails. Actually, their tails are stiff and up right and wag for balance during the fight and it's part of intimidation, just like flaring in bettas. So I can't really say because I can't ask the dog or the fish how much fun their having.

Also want to add that, if they dont want to fight, they wont. No one is forcing them to. It is their nature.

Just because it's the animals nature doesn't mean we should take advantage of that and put them in jars to watch them fight for our entertainment and pleasure. In that case, we should take every killer and murderer and make them go fight battles and wars because they like it so much... :dunno: doesn't make sense to me.

True, but put two non-fighting dogs in a room together and they may or may not fight, just depends on the dog. But that's not the story with bettas  , although I will admit there are some acceptions for cowardly/peaceful bettas.
Out of,let's say 50 males, maybe 5 will get along a bit longer/better than the others.

The experiment where they put 2 bettas in a lake with plenty of territory to call their own and they chose to fight instead :dunno: It's what they do.

I agree completely PT. Breeding is very painful and scary for a female betta and sometimes vice versa. Nobody will boycott bettas all together because of the pain inflicted on the mother during spawning though

Again, I'm not saying it's good to fight your bettas, mmkay? I AM saying "Duh! They're fighting fish!"
People have been fighting these fish long before any of us were even born, and they shall do so long after we're gone.

''no one is forcing them to''

yea your right....

theyre just put into a place that they cant get out of... and beat up until they lose..

... i donno how anyone can even say its ok..

and as for breeding...

females are usually taken out before they are hurt.. well at least i do...

and usually they do end up breeding... so obviously they arent too mad about being beat up in order to reproduce...

I agree with the complainers, bettas are delicate awesome fish that do not deserve to be mistreated. It may imuse you, but it is cruel to force them to fight. do as you please but please stop fighting bettas it is more fun to see a healthy betta that is NOT forced to fight.

You speak as though you're talking directly to betta fighters. Those people aren't here.

I think you guys are thinking of pretty long veiltails when you say things like that. When in fact, true fighters are stocky, conditioned extremely well and actually treated better than most of our/your bettas.

Go do some water changes before you throw stones at people. And FYI, there's a large percentage of members here who think we're all disgusting and cruel for keeping our bettas in 1 gallon tanks, different strokes for different folks.

I think we should all sit and cry about the 100,000+ bettas who are dying in cups at shops right now, rather than tsk tsk these pricey well treated fish

well i wouldnt say their argueing but their trying to get their point across that bettas do fight and theres nothing thats going to change that which i understand for wild bettas

but, captive bettas are left into the hands of the owners, that choose if they fight or not, the onlytime it is alright is if the betta jumps a divider when teh person isnt watching or home which in that case nothing can be done

I wouldn't consider it arguing. It's fact. Bettas fight. In foreign countries people fight bettas. In America there are betta fighting rings. There are websites where people pay an arm and a leg for tough stock to ensure they won't have a fish that gets hurt. I can't imagine that somebody would take a weak, malnourished fish and put it up against a well fed, well conditioned fighter. Why would they, so they can lose what they just bet?
I'm sure they're equally matched.

You guys are sitting here feeling sorry for well cared fish, I find that hilarious and I guess that's why I've even bothered to post in this thread.

IMO, you should love bettas for what they are :dunno: I guess there's such a thing as respect & appreciation and knowledge of a species and then there's "oooh, pretty fishy!"

Oh and MrBones... Do you know what betta splendens means?
Beautiful Warrior :)

im surprised people dont fight Red Devils  just look at their names, but im guessing they probably would if they only cost 4.99 to :p

they have just as much personality as a betta but they'll tear apart anything that gets in their way

i just mean when opinions clash.. everyone has their own opinion..

o well..

they will be fought and posting a topic here will do nothing to stop it .

hooray for bettas !

uhhhm, Red Devils are cichlids :) Each of which is very different. I actually own a red devil so I'm not just talking out my butt when I say you can put two in a tank that is large enough to accomodate them and they will get along pretty well. Not so with bettas so your comment was just...*sigh*

Anyhoo. The fish that you see for sale on websites, I'll admit, it's a bit alarming to somebody who, I dunno, has blinders on  But, is it really as surprising as you all seem to think it is? Did you really not think people fought bettas?

IMO, it's comparing apples to oranges. I have this one particular plakat that came from Thailand, he has the build of a fighter. I don't fight my bettas but by the looks of him...he could take almost anybody. I don't even think I'll be able to spawn him because he has no interest in the females...only males. He wants the boys so bad he can taste it, you can see it him. He's a true fighter.
Now the fancy finned, overbred copper DT that is from Straits Aquarium who sits next to him, he's the complete opposite, he's "bloop,I'm a pretty fishy look at me flare, gonna getcha" and the plakats like "shut up or I'll shut you up pretty boy". He's serious, he's not playing or displaying. Completely different fish with completely different ways about them. You guys just aren't grasping it. :dunno:
