Absolutely horrid

IMO, it's comparing apples to oranges. I have this one particular plakat that came from Thailand, he has the build of a fighter. I don't fight my bettas but by the looks of him...he could take almost anybody. I don't even think I'll be able to spawn him because he has no interest in the females...only males. He wants the boys so bad he can taste it, you can see it him. He's a true fighter.
Now the fancy finned, overbred copper DT that is from Straits Aquarium who sits next to him, he's the complete opposite, he's "bloop,I'm a pretty fishy look at me flare, gonna getcha" and the plakats like "shut up or I'll shut you up pretty boy". He's serious, he's not playing or displaying. Completely different fish with completely different ways about them. You guys just aren't grasping it. :dunno:
This is soooooooo true. I don't know that I have true fighters, but I have some plakats who can't even look in a mirror because they will kill themsleves slamming into the walls for 10 minutes after it's gone. Then my VTs and HMs are like "You are pretty! Look at me flare, oooooh scary"

I also agree with the fact that these fighters are kept better than all of our bettas no matter how much we'd like to think otherwise.

yea i said earlier that this thread isnt gonna help anything..

jus make everyone angry/frustrated

but when they do u sure as hell know theres gonna be firworks! and whos gonna be there to pull them apart???? uh??? greenpeace??

you must have missed my post saying its ok for them to fight in the wild because yes it is their nature (unless i meant to post it but didnt) but once their captive its up to the person that owns them if they fight or not, i dont know how much a true fighter cost but im guessing they cost a bit, that right there would turn me away from actually fighting it, plus there awesome looking fish

weve been over how much they cost like 10 times..

EXPENSIVE..

lets leave this topic alone and watch it fade into the TFF vault

No , Plakats are the distant grandfathers of all your fancy finned bettas. The new strains like HM and CT and so on are the newbies

Here's an interesting website if you can read it with an open mind :)
The term 'plakat' actually means biting fish.

They even answer the question of what happens to the loser on the end of this page

Where Have All the Fighters Gone

Either win or lose both of the fighter’s leave the arena injured. To heal the fish, the owners will keep his recovering fighter in a small cup with a little water, and a few drops of Acriflavine solution. Some owners use Indian almond feaf in the water as a medicine to cure the fish. The owner of the winning fish goes home with pride and glory. The owner of the losing fish goes home a little sad (real breeders bet very little, however gamblers bet large amounts on the fish) The winning fish will be considered to breed with another good female, or maybe given to a good friend. Some are sold if the buyer offers the right price. Surely the person buying the winner is taking it home to breed with his best stock.

After recovering the fish that lost (normally this takes 5 days.) The owner will consider releasing him back into the river or keeping him in the community tank and raising him as a normal pet. Some breeders will keep them in the bathroom tank and let them enjoy the mosquito larvae. Other breeders may even consider breeding the loser, if they feel the fighter has some qualities that make him suitable to breed. Some fighters are crossbred into the long fin types to improve the strength of the next generation. Not surprisingly the long fin types have been developed to be the healthiest and hardiest to breed. The long fin types are bred to show in the pet shop aquariums.

plakats are the short finned variaty... more true to the actual bettas as far as im aware... apart from wild bettas are bland in color..

the bettas u will find in most shops are long finned, highly coloured and more often than not veiltails.

as for owning but still fighting them... to them it sounds like its almost a religion... iv seen quite a few fighting sites, and the owners are realy dedicated, they wouldnt put them in the ring with somthin they know is gonna kick its arse.. they make sure they are well matched...

** edited because i put ,iv seen quite a few fights, instead of sayin iv seen quite a few sites :fun: :S ***

Just to clear up some points.

If you bought a betta that costs 50 bucks, and it loses a match. Will you...

a) Kill it, and waste 50 bucks + the money you betted
B) Heal it, and hope it can get the money back next time

If you say A, you must be some kind of guy who has too much money. I sent an email to the guy, a polite one, surprisingly. I'll post his reply when i get it (if i get it)

P.T.

its a sport , so i dont really object to it. but dog fighting is banned so there's not much difference.

i wouldnt say A or B because if i bought a betta for 50 dollars it would never be put in a situation where it could be injured lol, if he wanted to fight id buy him a little betta ornament he could beat teh crap out of lol

Now THAT is an idea... Serioulsy, imagine that. When the betta bites it, a computer analyzes how hard it bit, and gives it points. Whoever gets the most points, wins!

Greatest solution to betta fighting ever!

I've paid 50 and up for many bettas and I put them in spawning tanks, definately a situation where they can and will be injured. I do it for the love of the breed as do people who fight. I really think that some of you have an idea in your head about a dirty, dim-lit basement where poor bettas are fought to the death. Sure, there are most likely places like this, but not from the sites we are discussing.

As wuv has said, if someone is taking two fish from Wal-Mart and throwing them together, yeah, lemme at 'em. That's not what we're talking about and I believe we all could learn from these sites in many ways. History, tradition, and excellent care of the fish.

Do I fight my fish? No. Would they love to? Most definately.
