Actually they were bred for fighting...

It started in Siam some 150 years ago. The Siamese people would fight bettas, and hence the first form of betta madness was born: People would wager everything they owned, even their families! These betta fights were popular, so much so that the King of Siam decided to license them and to collect on them as well.

Not that I agree with it, don't get me wrong. It was a way/custom for those people. Just think though, if that hadn't occurred, would we have the darlings that we have now? Just thought I'd inform.

Also, please let me know if I am incorrect.

It was a custom for those people, who could control the fish. It's not a custom to the fish, it's a cruel manner.
I'm sorry for bringing this topic back to the forefront, but I had to reply to what was directed towards me.

It was/is a custom for those people. A fish cannot be controlled anymore than you or I can be. What can be controlled is the environment they are in and from what I have studied on the subject, it very much is so. Of course it is not in the custom of the fish, it is in the nature of the fish. Naturally they are aggressive. These fish are conditioned to be better fighters than they naturally are. That does not mean they are conditioned to be fighters because they already are.
