I used thin ply to surround the shelves in my lounge. Had the same idea as you that it has the same finish. Didn't work though because the veneer chips away when cutting it. Even using a very fine blade on the jigsaw and moving slowly along. So I ended up painting mine with a dark brown paint and then varnishing it
Going that route I might as well have used MDF like I used on the luminiare box the first time as it cuts nicely and is smoother.
If you really want a wood finish then veneering is a good bet. Either using the iron on stuff with the glue on the back or by getting the raw stuff and using some good wood glue. water and heat though doesn't go to well with veneer and glue. More the heat I found.
My suggestion for a wood finish would be a roll of adhesive Fablon (Vinyl) in whatever wood finish you want. That will stick well and looks cool. I used this to do the cabinet prior to my current one and it looked cool:
American Walnut fablon this is:
I think with those LEDs at the height you have them you have just gone into the realms of fairly high light!! Keep an eye out for algae which will tell you.
Thanks Andy, I think I'll just paint it, it's easier and cheaper.
The current height was just to see what it looked like, I'm currently trying to figure out how to mount it as a window sill is partially above the tank.
Tempted to do a re-scape over the weekend as it has been up and running for 4 months now, I might go out on my bike to find some decent rocks tomorrow, I really want to use the same plants but I may pick up some stems too, we'll just have to see how things go!
The re-scape is under way, all original plants will be recycled, I'm actually quite shocked at how dense the Microsorum is, it's really developed, I need more Crypts now so I've posted in the wanted section if anyone is selling any, otherwise I'll have to nip out and buy some.
