not sure, i don't remember, an hour or so i think!

just raising my temperature another degrees today, its on 28.5 going to try and get it to 29 Celsius by the end of the day. going up by 0.5 degrees a day wouldn't bother them would it, it started at just below 28 Celsius.
the females eyes are funny aswel, bit cloudy looking and cloudy around the eye aswel, on the bit that actually holds the eye, attached to its head if you will. so far its not looking good, every time i look at it i see something else wrong!
i emailed him with pictures today but very much doubt he will do anything about it!

hope she gets better mate i really do

yeah so do i, after watching the last one just die slowly over about 5 weeks of not eating, im afraid this is going to go the same way, i hope it doesn't but its showing no signs of eating so thats my main concern at the moment, im trying everything though and running out of options!!

theres never been one minute since i let her out of the bag that i thought she would make it. but what can i do? the guy doesn't give a .... doesn't care, there is nowhere on earth it seems i can get a decent female!
i might just scrap the lot and start again, and just wait until i have the cash for some decent rays.
its people like that, that ruin the hobby

the problem is retics are a very cheap ray and are treated as such

i would never buy any ray that i have not seen feed with hip bones showing its just to much of a risk

with the scobina i got the hip bones were showing but i also saw them feed so thats all that matters

i wouldnt take the word of any seller that the ray was feeding

unless breeding is your main goal them i wouldnt bother getting a female

well it isnt of any great importance to me that they breed. I was told by you, and others before i got them that they was hard to get eating and get into good health. I figured if i can keep these well and keep them healthy id be confident with some thats going to be costing me thousands rather than tens. I think ive lost confidence now. Im not too down hearted as i am certain its no fault of my own that the females havent done well, if i was doing anything wrong then the males wouldnt be doing aswel as they are. Does the male look well to you?
I wouldnt mind scobina as a next step but you got the only ones ive seen for sale! Though im glad i never payed the grand he wanted for them!
Any suggestions as to which way to go regarding rays?

well looks like my suspicions have been confirmed! that this female retic was worse than the last and wouldn't last as long!

i think i'm going to be back on the phone today. 5 days, and its dead, if that isn't proof of poor health then i don't now what is!

the female had death curl that could be seen in the picture you posted before death

their is nearly no chance of saving a ray with death curl as its brain damage that is due to long exposure to bad water conditions

if you want confidence the buy a small pair of motoro

your tank may not be big enough for adult motoro but they are a good starter ray and will give you 12-18 months of happy ray keeping you should be even able to breed them in your tank before needing to sell them at a later date

its better to buy a pair of motoro now rather than buying lots of retics that have a strong chance of dieing

motoro will give you the confidence you need

rays are not hard to take care of its just retics that put most people off ray keeping

yeah but even motoro's are expensive for a common ray, and will i be able to sell them on when the time comes?

it wouldn't of been my water would it? because the males are in perfect condition and have come out with some really nice colours.
i will have a look around for some small motoro's, any recommendations on where to look, or is it just a case of browsing the classifieds?
oh that guy sent me some more pictures of them dats but they aren't good, you can see the markings a bit better on the wide bar but its still very dark, i think it has the same amount of bars as a pulcher but the one that goes to a point at the bottom on them doesn't on this one, will try and get them up on here.

got the pictures now, can you tell what they are??

Shame about the ray , is there no one here who breeds them and you can get a decent quality one of them? Might be worth just sticking with the two you have until you can afford the more pricey ones , are you not off to Holland or somewhere this year to get one anyhows?

well T1 said i could tag along with him and chip in with fuel cost etc but since i got made redundant i have next to no cash so its not going to happen as much as i'd of loved to of gone!
i'd find and buy some of the rays i want but can't afford them yet, will look into motoro's as T1 mentioned and see where that gets me! don't want to pay a lot for them though, i've seen them go for anything from £50 - £200, so it depends what i find. no theres nowhere that i know of that sells the reticulatus thats near. that north lakes said they will let me know when they get some in, but they said there about £65 for 4" disc which is the same as the ones i payed £35 for, but that might be the difference between one that lives and one that dies.
i know i am now going to look into different species, but the fact i have never seen or know of any fully grown retics, and definitely don't know of someone breeding them, makes me very determined to do it. not to breed and make money as they only sell for £40-£50 but just because i want to be able to do it.
and if i did breed them then i could pass them on to people that want them and they would know that they were perfectly healthy tank bred rays that are relatively small. i just want to do it!

a motoro will cost you £90-100 for a small pup

how much have you spent on female retics now it must be close to that and you have had the pain of losing 2 rays which is very upsetting

i should be breeding scobina and marble motoro soon as i have put a deposit on a nice pair that were for sale on aquarist classifieds

marble motoro are near as nice as peals if not better and stay a bit smaller than normal motoro

Hope you breed the scobina, they are supposed to be quite hardy for rays so wouldnt mind having a go at keeping them :)
