5Ft Seabray Dolphin Tank With Sa/ca Cichlids

I went a bought some fish today :)

I managed to get 4 x Geophagus Red Head Tapajos (for £26) and 1 x HRP female (for £5 - maybe a bit of Blue Convict in her)

They're all in my 125L tank now (currently a quarantine tank), along with the 4 peppered cory.

I am watching the Ammonia and Nitrite levels closely on the tank which is running with old media, the first time I've moved media between tanks like this. I moved the media into the tank along with the 4 cory this morning, 1 of the cory had a buoyancy / gas problem when I got home this afternoon, which raised concerns for me a little. I did an 80% water change straight away to be on the safe side and he now seems a lot better, maybe his gas problem came from gulping air when in the net? but I can't assume that I don't think. About 1 hour after the water change the ammonia and Nitrite levels were at zero, which you would expect. I am going to do another Ammonia and Nitrite test on the tank very shortly, worst case I'll do a water change again tonight to put things in good shape until the morning. I just hope there's no mini-cycle going on...*fingers crossed* All the new fish seem happy enough.

The plan is all the fish stay in the tank for a week, and all being well the Tapajos get moved into the main tank to join the slightly older and bigger male that in there, and then they'll be 5 :)

The female HRP will stay were she is until I think it is a good time to move the male in with her. That will be 1 CA removed from the main tank then with one more to go before it's nothing but SA's. I figure this won't happen until I have got the Rotkeil Sevs through quarantine and into the main tank though...

Pics tomorrow of the new fish, they look great...Tapajos are about 1.5" approx, the female HRP is more like 3"

Not great pics but have other things on this morning, only used the phone to take them...all these are in the qt right now...

The tapajos look good. So long as you keep an eye on the stats after the media trf and w/c appropriately, you should be fine, there is sometimes a spike after cloning filters, but its usually low and doesnt cause too many problems.

Yep, after the 80% water change yesterday evening the Ammonia and Nitrite has remained zero when tested this morning, I'll be doing another smaller water change tonight and again tomorrow night just to be safe. The tank could probably do with it anyway as the sand hasn't been used in a tank before...and the fish won't mind, in fact it should benefit them all these water changes anyway :)

The cory is also fine now, must have gulped air and got gas

That worried me yesterday was the fact the cory went a bit off and I thought the tank was in a nasty mini-cycle...wasn't the case in the end..phew...

Do you think one week in qt is long enough Minxfishy?

Your asking someone who doesnt qt fish (yes I know, shoot me  ) I know the recommended is 2 - 4 weeks to be on the safe side, but after a week, if they are eating healthily, poo is all a good colour, have no visible signs of illness, then I would move them.

I haven't qt'ed in the past either and haven't had any issues putting fish straight in...but as this tank was going spare I figured why not...longer term once I have all my stocking in place it will be a HRP heaven :)

So far so good, the tapa are very greedy, the 4 of them got through a whole blood worm ration this morning in about 2 minutes...left none for the HRP who isn't settled yet...the tank has lots of little pits in the sand already too so they're busy feeding on anything and everything, I really need some MTS to help smooth it out lol

I figure I'll have no worries putting them in the main tank next weekend :)

Just "upgraded" my python to have 2 tap fittings so I can mix hot and cold :) No mixer taps in the house...

Stressful day for you I see!

When are these fish going to be relaxing? :D

They'll relax long before I do!!! The main thing is I am still learning stuff...

Because I am working right next to the tank I can see everything that's going on, I'm really getting to see their proper behaviour now rather than the things they do when you turn up in front of the tank :)

The funny thing is I've had no real issues at all until I started with the new tank and everything that's followed on from that...

Quick update, will provide pics later

I decided to move the 4 geos into the main tank today, they seem to be doing just fine...I also moved the male HRP (ex-boss) from the main tank and put him in with the female in the other tank (now a "breeding" tank). Seems the two HRPs have hit it off, the colours are amazing and I think they're looking for where best to do thier thing. Because the HRPs have hit it off well I've also moved the cory back into the main tank too...they wouldn't last the night I don't think...

Fingers crossed all will be well tomorrow, so far so good :)

I managed to get a small video of the Tapa's (Geophagus sp red head tapajos) together in the main tank, with pretty much all the other residents coming into shot at one point or another....wanting food probably :)

I'm not sure how the slightly older Tapa is taking it all but so far so good, he isn't hanging around with them all the time but I am hoping he will because he'll provide them with a bit of security if he does I think.

Here it is:

Those tapajo's look great! I'd read that they don't really swim together and stay apart but it's definitely good to see that they do. Just makes me want some more even more

I'm almost tempted to order some at £20 each just to get more!

One is already doing it's own thing now, we'll see whether they stick together over the long term once settled...

Could you arrange for that courier to pick up from an not so local LFS?
