55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

I have never quarantined fish until I got the angelfish I just bought. They are juveniles, so much more fragile than adults, i guess, so the place I bought them has a strict acclimation procedure that i followed.

So far, it's working well. They looked SO bad when I got them, but have survived and are on the verge of thriving. It was a total PITA, but worth it.

I'm warming up to the idea of quarantine, especially with fish I buy online, but not sure I'm there.
I used to not quarantine. One bad ich outbreak cured me of that.

The new light fixture seems to have a bit more red spectrum than the last one.
It is, and I'm not a huge fan of it. I'd like something more in the normal, white spectrum. The one I have seems to be doing the job, so we'll see what the holidays bring money-wise.

That is something I like about the new light I got a few weeks ago. Well, actually, there are a few things I like such as it having a timer and fade in/out when it comes on/off. The old light didn't have this.

As to the colors I like that it has less red than the old which had red, white and blue. Could select color combinations but not individual intensities, The new light has the red, white and blue but also adds green and the blue is on a different intensity control. I run the same as to red, white and green but a lower intensity on the blue. The new light is also 6500K as to temperature which is like sunlight. My fish seem to like it, especially my rope fish. With the old light he was always hiding but, with the new, he is almost always out and about.

I sure wish my fruit fly pupae would start hatching out. My frogs are getting hungry!
Are you sitting on them to keep them warm? ;) With the fruit flies and the grumbles about quarantine time I get the impression that you are about as patient as to waiting as myself... :)

Me? Impatient? You wound me, sir. I'm not too excited about the flies, in truth. But my frogs are--they've been on thin rations for a week or so as the supply of adults dwindled.

This light isn't really adjustable. It has color buttons for blue, green, red, orange. But no way to adjust from there. I keep it on full-spectrum white, which has a definite pink tinge to it. I plan to remedy that next time someone gives me money for something.

Hmmm, while waiting on the flies I wonder if your toads would eat crickets if you have a local source. :dunno: I know that the fire bellies I had many years ago gobbled them up but my toads were a lot larger than yours are right now. I know that my local Petco sells really small crickets... A while back I got some for my cichlids. First cichlids I've ever had that would not tear into crickets. Dumb things totally ignored. I have weird fish. LOL! I would highly suggest a tight hood if crickets are used... ;)

<edit to add the following>
As to your lights you might be able to add micro variable rheostats (think dimmer) to each light line if there is room on the control and you are good with a fine low wattage soldiering iron. You would want to test as to if the LEDs can be dimmed first by just trying on a wall socket dimmer. Since the lights can be adjusted as to intensity they are probably dimmable but there are other ways to change intensity other than lowering the voltage so I would test first. Probably not worth the effort but a thought. Shoot, my new lights only cost me ~$18.00 USD.

What kind of lights did you get? I have an old, smallish Marineland Hidden LED fixture I've been thinking about installing. It is just white, no colors, but maybe some additional white would balance out the red a bit. It would definitely be good to throw a bit of light into the shadows under the land area.

Here is what I got although it seems that the price has gone up a bit. Just select the length you would want to get the price. Current price for a 26.8 inch tube is $35.99 USD.
As expected the suction cups don't hold and I considered several other ways to mount but ended up just using the 'KISS' principle and put a bit of silicone in the center of each of the 4 cups. Since the cups were holding 4-7 days it was plenty of time for the silicone to fully set. The light comes in 6 lengths from 7 inches to 26.8 inches. I got a 15 inch tube. Keep in mind that the term 'tube' is accurate. It is literally a tube, not a square or rectangle.

The light is fully submersible and works well but it has only been a bit under a month. Also it does not have a true timer but, rather, three durations of 6, 10 and 12 hours. Since I run the lights for 10 hours anyway this was fine for me. I run mine from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. To set I just pressed the duration button for 10 hours at 10:00 AM and done. When I first set the lights turned off and I was thinking, crud, the thing is faulty but it was just doing its startup thing. After that it 'remembers' and will do the same every day. At 10:00 AM it will gradually light up coming to full intensity at 10:15 AM. At 7:45 PM it starts dimming to fully off at 8:00 PM.

Nice! I was looking at this one. It's more expensive, but a full 48". I actually think the tube might be better, as it would cast some light into the shadows under the land area. Maybe I'd actually see my bottom feeders once in a while! Wouldn't that be fun.

In other news: I am FINALLY starting to get some fruit flies hatching out. Wow, they are really nice and fat, too. My frogs approve of this new development. 🐸🪰

Do you look at reviews? ;) I quit looking at 1 star reviews on the light you linked after page 5. Most were concerning quick failure. Of course some of that could be the customer's fault but 5% 1 star reviews is pretty high.

Good deal on the flies. :)

Himalayan maidenhair fern! I wonder what the native names are. Pretty cute, and should just grow to fill the available space.

This one is cheaper and gets better reviews...🧐

Looks a lot better at just 3% 1 star reviews. The control also looks pretty comprehensive.

On re-reading my post on the reviews it seems a bit condescending, that was in no way the intent. I do always check reviews though but don't pay much attention to 4&5 stars as I want to see where there were issues not happy reports. ;) LOL! You DO have to take some of the negative reviews with a grain of salt though. ;) My label maker and micro computer are good examples of this. On my micro system there were negative reviews saying that as soon as they connected a USB-c device the thing would do nothing. DUH! The USB-c port is the power connection to the A/C adapter. On the label maker there were a bunch of negatives about the thing always reporting low battery power on the display and won't print. Had a hunch on this one and was right. The thing takes 4 AA batteries meaning that it wants 6 volts. If you use normal NiCad rechargeable they only put out 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts meaning that the label maker is trying to run on 4.8 volts instead of the 6 volts it wants. Of course it reports low battery. When it arrived I tried some of my NiCad rechargeable and sure enough it reported low battery. Dug through a junk door and found 3 old regular 1.5 batteries and tried with those and one rechargeable (not a good thing to do) and it was fine. Ordered some Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries that are a true 1.5 volts (as far as I know Lithium-ion are the only rechargeable that will actually give 1.5 volts) and the thing is doing just fine.

Sigh, I get SO long winded sometimes... usually... all the above is saying is that you should pay more attention to bad reviews instead of good but take into account that some/many bad reviews are caused by customer error. Sort of reminds me of an old tech term as in "This issue is a PICNIC". PICNIC == Problem In Chair Not In Computer. LOL! I also liked another old term. "This issue shows an error ID 10 T." Take away the spaces and ID 10 T spells IDIOT. ;)

With rifle shooting, we sometimes say the problem isn't in the scope; it's about three inches behind it.
