I found the story below on another website. I know it's gross, but perhaps it's possible something like that was happening to your tanks? You said even the fish in the small tank died?
"Hello; In 1998 I took a position teaching biology in Brunswick County NC. I had to rent a room and could not keep my tank there. I set up two tanks in the room where my biology classes were held. I made the mistake of letting the students know the fish were my personal fish. Over time I found several things in the tanks and eventually someone put something toxic in and all the fish died.
Among them was a kuhli I had kept for around eight years as near as I can calculate. I was out of fishkeeping for about six months after that but kept my tanks."
I wouldn't put it past a naughty kid to do that, but they would have to be awful crafty to sneak it in there every go around, and also to find something that you wouldn't be visible once added to the tank.
Wow, I've just finished reading all of this. I'm so sorry for all that's happened. It must be so disappointing! Try again at the end of the holidays though, hopefully everything will go better next time!
I wish I had something to suggest that could have happened to your tank.
I am heading in the direction of taking the plunge with this again, but I am dealing with a current money drain right now due to some other things happening in real life. Needed a repair to A/C unit and its going to cost over
!!! Money I really don't have to put there currently.
