My Betta (RIP) had a slate cave which he liked. When I re-did his tank I sterlilised a jar and stuck aquarium stones on it using aquarium silicone and then placed it in the tank on it's side. It made a fab little cave and with the rest of the stones scattered around the substrate it looked...

You're right when you say that people will think that tank is too small; I do, and for that reason I wouldn't use it - BUT I have seen much, much, much worse so I wouldn't worry about it too much. That aside, I think your setup could be improved if you added a cave or somewhere to hide. Bettas...

Looks like I might be back on track. Am probably going to start 12 hour testing tomorrow. Am going to order plants this week (just a carpet plant and some java fern to start off with) and let them settle in for a week, maybe two. Will then see about getting some fish. Have found one more local...

I've had a massive piece of mopani wood in my tank for the duration of my tank cycle (so far 48 days). For the first couple of weeks my water was very, very brown, but now there is only the very slightest tinge and I quite like it.

You're assuming that I've not been actively doing anything without asking me. A group of us have been campaigning for years - but quite simply, nobody seems to care. Nobody cares where small animals come from (though dogs and cats are a different concern for some reason... they must be more...

My ammonia was processing in 24 hours but for the last two nights it's been at .25ppm. I've been redosing it anyway (but taking into account the .25ppm). Is there a reason it's stopped processing it so quickly? Anything I might be doing wrong?

It's illegal to take stones/pebbles/rocks from the beach. Though there's not exactly someone who patrols to enforce it... I have lots from the beach here.

Well I wanted to get a new hood anyway. My tank is second hand and the cord which controls the lighting is a bit dodgy; have to wiggle it around before the light turns on. Wouldn't be too put out paying £20 extra for the two-tubed one.

If I was to buy the upgraded hood, which has 2 X 18W tubes - would this be excessive or would it be fine? Better/worse?

Before - reading is .25ppm straight out of the tap. After sitting for 12 hours the reading was .5ppm

Really? I've seen a few tap water stats which have stated upto 1ppm ammonia and nobody has said that :crazy:

I redosed the ammonia last night and checked it a couple of hours later before I went to bed and it was somewhere between 3 and 4ppm. I checked this morning out of curiosity and it was 1ppm - that's good, right? :)
