Is This A Good Setup For A Betta ?

this is my current setup for my betta (got it maybe 2 weeks ago)

3 gallon tank with 1 mystery snail

heater keeps the tank at great steady temp, and i have an airstone turned down very low

the plant on the left is fake, the one on the right real.

i know most people may say to get a larger tank but i cant due to space limitations and such...

anyways, other then that, do you have any constructive ideas or recommendations?

also dont have a name for my betta yet any ideas? =)

also do you think this tank needs a filter? (it does smell a little funky and i do weekly 30-40% water changes)

You're right when you say that people will think that tank is too small; I do, and for that reason I wouldn't use it - BUT I have seen much, much, much worse so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

That aside, I think your setup could be improved if you added a cave or somewhere to hide. Bettas also like to sit on plants, so the addition of a sturdy, broad-leaved plant like an Anubias would probably be gratefully received.

yeah im thinking ill get the same one as my guppy tank (http/www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3523858)
i can turn the current down pretty low and its small and internal so it wont block my lid

That aside, I think your setup could be improved if you added a cave or somewhere to hide. Bettas also like to sit on plants, so the addition of a sturdy, broad-leaved plant like an Anubias would probably be gratefully received.

any specific cave u can think of? (i have both a petco and petsmart within range lol)

My Betta (RIP) had a slate cave which he liked. When I re-did his tank I sterlilised a jar and stuck aquarium stones on it using aquarium silicone and then placed it in the tank on it's side. It made a fab little cave and with the rest of the stones scattered around the substrate it looked pretty natural.

I would get a real anubias, they are pretty hard to kill off so you should be fine if you want a no-fuss plant. Anubias Nana would be best.

alright ill look for that plant when i go in a little.

yeah i was thinkin i could use maybe like a jar or something the only problem is it would need to be small (3 gallon aquarium) but big enough for him to swim inside of

If its just the 2 of them and you add a filter you might be able to keep him. make sure the ph is over 7 or his shell will pit and rot.

i would of but it hangs on the back and would prevent me from using my cover. so i decided to buy another one like my guppy one ( http/www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3523858) just installed it. and it allows me to close the lid properly.

yup its just the 2 of them. hmn do u think most tap water would have a ph of 7 or more? (from southern California if that helps at all)
