Hi, I am looking for Dwarf Rasboras (Boraras maculatus, B.merah or B. South-Thailand). I can´t find them anywhere. Does anybody know of a shop in central Scotland that stocks them, or did anybody breed them successfully and is looking for a good home for the fry? Thanks for your help

    Scary Unidentified Bug

The things sticking out it´s head are antennae, it needs them to smell. You can actually tell that it is a male because his antennae have 7 leaves, while females only have 6, and there are smaller. Watch out for more, there usually don´t come alone and can eat a tree bare within hours!

    Do I Want An Aquarium?

I have to agree with inchworm and chrisbassist. Why not have a cat and a tank? It is relaxing to watch the tank, and so it is to watch a sleeping cat. But nothing is more relaxing than watching your tank with a purring cat on your knees! :fun: And my cats HAVE eyelashes, whereas my shrimps...

    Dropped Test In Tank!

still has mercury in there. Here is a link to a safety sheet about Nessler´s Reagent (that´s what the test is) http://hannainstusa.com/hannaindia.com/msds/sdsHI_93764-0.pdf . That you can buy something doesn´t mean it´s safe to have in the tank! You can buy fairy liquid, ammonia, chlorine...

    Dropped Test In Tank!

Not sure, maybe at the laboratory the water supplier uses for their analysis? I don´t know if they do tests for private clients. But if you clean everything out, and use a good water conditioner that binds heavy metals you should be fine. :good:

    Dropped Test In Tank!

Oh dear! At least there where no fish in it. What test are you using? My Ammonia test (Nutrafin) contains mercury, which is very poisonous. It might even kill the filter bacteria as well. You could check with the manufacture of your test what the contents are, but I suppose they will be about...

Need Some Help With Injured Fish!

Hi, what kind of loaches are they? I once had a sun loach (inherited it with second hand tank), and it nipped fins quite badly, had to put it in a tank on it´s own. And he is less than 3 inches long, it´s not always the big fish that are the bad boys.

    Silent Air Pump

I have got a sera precision, that´s really quiet (don´t know the tetratec though, so can´t compare). It´s the bubbles coming out the spongefilter outlet that´s making the noise!

Get him to the vets, a forum can´t help here. Even if we knew what it was you would have to take him to the vets for treatment. And don´t wait for the weekend.

    To Pop Or Not?

pop it! No, I don´t really mean to pop it, but to drain it. I use a needle, as clean as possible (put in in desinfectant, and desinfect the skin as well) to prick just a tiny hole, desinfect it and cover it afterwards. I feel that blisters tend to burst uncontrolled (rubbing in shoes or banging...

    My Kitty Cats

Hello, You will have to take him to the vet, especially if he is unwell and shivering. A bump could be anything from a wart to an infection in his leg, that´s impossible to say without even seeing a photo of it, and even with a photo it can be hard to tell. Is he lame at all? You should also...

    Red Cherry Shrimp Temperature

I have even heard about people who kept them in their pond over the summer and they bred. My Cherry´s seem to be much more active since I got a heater. I have set it to 24C. Before the temp was about 16-20C and they seem to hide a lot and did not eat much. I am still waiting for them to breed...

Has Anybody Else Experienced A School Fire?

We had a fire in the girls toilette once as well, somebody had set fire to paper in the sink. But quite regulary we had false alarms due to one of the chemistry teachers and her smoky experiments. And one time the fire brigade had to come to mop up a dropped bottle of mercury.

    Aquarium Aeration Starter Set

THere are certainly less noisy once available. I have got a "sera precision", which is pretty silent compared to the airpump I had years ago (can´t remember brand). Of course you can still hear it, but the bubbles are actually much louder than the pump itself. I just had a look at the bargain...

Yeah, will be Cherry babies. Unless you have White pearl instead of Amanos, they can breed with Red Cherries. Whatever they are, congratulations to your offspring!

    What Is This Plant?

I am no expert on plants, but it looks like some kind of Anubias to me. Perhaps A. heterophylla. They are stiff, as they can grow outside the water. They grow rather slowly compared to most other aquatic plants. Make sure when putting it back in the tank not to bury the bulb bit (where your thump...

    Breeding Suggestions

What's your water like? I would go from there. If you have very soft water maybe try danios, or small barbs like dwarf rasboras. For serious breeding (selecting for a specific colour/ finshape whatever) you would need more than two tanks though. If you stick guppys in a tank they will multiply...

How Much Is That Fishey In The Window?

I don´t expect all staff in a store to have all the knowledge. There should be one or two who knows a bit more, which is certainly required to keep their display tanks running smoothly. E.g. if they test the water for clients, they should know what it is about. And the most important thing IMO...

My Apple Snail Looks Dead Help ?

And take him out of the tank, as dead big snails can poison the water pretty quickly (build up of ammonia-nitrite). Put him in a bowl with water or another small container, put a lid on it as he might escape if he is still alive. If he is alive and no fish throwing him about anymore, he should...

    Can Anyone Help

Hi, You say your water stats are perfect, how are they? Was the other dead fish a cherry barb as well? And how long have they been in the tank, did you introduce any new fish or plants recently? An arched back and finrot be symptoms of general illthrift, due to a poor diet or wrong water...

Accidently Submerged A Juwel Heater Is It Still Safe?

Does it have an IP (Ingress Protection)code written on it? The newer Juwel heaters have IP 68 as far as I know, the 8 means they are protected for being submerged constantly. My Juwel heater is about 600miles away at my parents, therefore I can´t check 8-)

    Cycling In A Bucket

why not, sound ok. I have never done a fishless cycle myself though. You will need a heater, otherwise the cycle would take very long I presume. The advantage of doing the cycle in the tank is probably that the bacteria also grow in the gravel, but for the bacteria in the filter it should not...

    Tattooed Fish

actually, dogs get tattooed. Certainly not for cosmetic reasons, but for identification (numbers in their ears). Thanks to the invention of the microchip it´s not that common anymore, but go back 10, 15 year and you will find a lot of tatooed dogs! Tattoed and dyed fish, beside Bettas in...

Tank Of The Month - March 2010

Even Jäger can boil your tank, did happen to mine years ago, lost a pair of Kribensis. But the heater was ancient (prob. 15years or so), certainly every heater breaks eventually.

    My First Tropical Aquarium

Hi, To choose the right fish, you need to have a look at the water. Some fish prefer very soft and acid water, other hard and alkaline. Put in the wrong water, they won´t thrieve as well, are proun to disease and die early. As it is not that easy to change the water parameters you get with your...

    Undergravel Filtration

Hi there, as said before, the undergravel filter will not help to clean your gravel, it will do the opposite. It works by sucking the dirt into the gravel, where bacteria will do their job as in any filter. So the gravel acts as filter media, hence will get as manky. Don´t get undergravel...

External Outlet Pipe Broken - Quick Help Please

I got the idea with the bucket from another forum. Someone kept it for 48 hours, and did not have any problems. Even if some of the bacteria die, to have mature media to start your new/repaired filter is always better than having none and having to start cycling from scratch. After restarting...

External Outlet Pipe Broken - Quick Help Please

Sorry I can´t help you with how to fix it, if the actual connection at the filter itself is broken it sound pretty unfixable. If you can´t keep the filter running, you should take the filter media and store it in a bucket of tank water. This will give the filter bacteria a greater chance of...

    This Hot Water Business-Poll

Always used mixing tap (shower, actually) for water changes using a hose, never had any trouble. Now with my wee tank I only use cold water. To adjust the temperature (the tank doesn´t have a heater) I just let it sit in a bucket for a day.

    Dobbies Garden Centres

Hi, Got my tank and shrimps from Dobbies. They are certainly targeting the mainstream, average fish-keeper. But I guess that´s what you have to do to run a buisness, unless you become a real speciality-shop people travel 100s of miles for- which I don´t think a gardencentre tries to be. The...

Does A Tank With Fish In Weight More Than A Tank Without?

Would imagine the density of a fish is higher than water, as dead fish sink to the ground rather than to float. Therefore if you add a fish and take out the volume of water it replaces, the tank will be slighty heavier while still containing the same volume. A cat on the hood will increase the...
