    Moving A Marine Tank

Shame you're in the wrong side of the country (I'm in the NE), because I have LOADS of 15L plastic buckets with snap on lids i want to get rid of - they contained vegetable oil - I run my car on the stuff - you could have these to put all the water, fish and live rock in!

    Overflow

You can use a syphon setup. But the way to prevent floods is to fit a float valve to the sump end. So if there's a power failure, the water flow into the sump will stop when it reaches a certain level - just like how a toilet cistern works. In fact you could use a ball valve arrangement - just...

    Worm Hitchiker Id Please

Hi, can anyone ID this worm for me please? It's about 5cm (2") long, with brown and cream banding, its head has these weird feelers on the end, about 10 of them. I found it in a colony of star polyps I'm acclimatising right now. Sorry for the quality of the photo, it was the best out of a bad...

    Info On Box Fish

We saw some boxfish at our lfs yesterday...the wife wanted one, but I warned against it. When they get stressed, they release a potent toxin. In the ocean, that's fine coz it gets diluted, but in the confines of the aquarium, it can easily kill everything. Best kept with peaceful, non agressive...

    Starting A Marine Tank

For a tank that size, it's definitely worth getting an RO unit, it'll pay for itself in no time. Get one with a deionising unit; that'll give you really clean water They are pretty simple to install. Tee off an existing pipe and plumb it into that.

    Fresh Water To Salt Water.

Mate, you're better off getting rid of EVERYTHING except the tank. Start from a completely clean slate. The external cannister filter can be kept, use it for activated carbon and phosphate remover - remove the bioballs. Go to your lfs, have a look around, talk to the staff. Buy books, do some...

    Getting Started

Er....no. It's living rock...'living' in the sense that it hosts millions of bacteria that treat fish waste, plus lots of little critters living on the rocks surface and in nooks and crannies. By dunking your live rock in fresh water, you've done a great job of killing off a lot, if not all of...

    Adding Live Rock

Yes, you can do this...this is what I did when I started my marine tank. I noticed smaller ammonia & nitrite spikes after I added each lot. IIRC, I had three lots of LR. Of course, I didn't add any livestock until I had all the LR in place and the tank was fully cycled...

Got my first RO unit installed :good: Our local fish shop closed down, so there went my local RO supply...down the drain... The instructions said I must run off 5 US gallons before using the water or plumbing in the DeIonising (DI) unit. Sadly I got so inolved in getting it setup I...

    Yellow Tang

My tang greedily eats anything....flakes, brine (live & frozen) & nori...I think she ought to go on a diet! Yeah, garlic is good, give it a try...I chop up one clove and mix it with a block of frozen brine shrimp, then let it sit for a few minutes, then pour it all in the tank. She...

    Mass Algea Problem...

I have roughly the same sized tank as yours ~120 liter. I have a small 12 liter aquarium as a refugium, by way of a syphon off the main tank, and returned via a canister filter. I packed the ref. with lots of macro algae, and in about a week, my nitrates basically halved, from about 40-50ppm to...

    Overstocked?

Inverts like shrimps, corals, etc. don't contribute as much waste as fish do. Did he have a sump? These are also used to increase the volume of water and add stuff like macro algae, which help to reduce/eliminate nitrates & phosphates So when are you getting a mrine tank then? :D

I Need Some Instructions On Water Changes!

OK, that's good to hear! :good: I think your troubles are down to a) your source water and/or b ) the way you are mixing your batches of seawater. If you can track down a source of RO water, then use this instead. Better yet, you can maybe get an RO water unit installed in your home, and put...

Help With Red Sea Prizm Protien Skimmer

That's odd...it works for me. Use a VERY long piece of airline tubing, say over a metre! I assume you've taken it to pieces and given it a good clean, and checked the impeller i.e. the pump is pushing water through? How high/low is the water mark on the inlet tube? If it's too low, then it may...

Help With Red Sea Prizm Protien Skimmer

Sure. I have one of these. You need to prime it. Can you see the nipple where you put the airline tube? Put a length of airline tube over this nipple, then turn on the skimmer - make sure there is water in the chamber first, just pour some in with a jug so that it's full. Then open the flat knob...

    Crashing Tank

That's good to hear! :good: If I may just stick my oar in here....40% water changes every week does sound really excessive to me (and expensive!). And why have you decided on 40%? When you mix up a new batch, do you let it mix for a day, or do you just mix it and put it straight into the...
