Going To Be Away For A While

WOW, Painful delima and I know it all too well - Just leaving today June 7 and not returning until June 19 - I also have someone in to do feeding but have opted to have them do nothing else. I have done heavy water changes all this week in prep and as with you CO2 and lights all on timer. My...

    Hair Algae

Amen to all of the above and as a survivor of a hair algae attack I can recommend that if you fertilize you add potassium to your fertilizer regimen. I have helped a couple of people beat back green and brown algae by increasing their weekly dose of potassium to the tank. It seems to allow...

    Bristlenose And Plants

You could work the other end of the equation and get some really fast growing plants that will out pace some of the “eatersâ€￾. I have Silver Dollars in with Balansae, Wendtii “Redâ€￾, Dwarf Subulata, Tall Subulata, Corkscrew Val, Anubias Petite, Anubias Barteri, Red Temple Plant, Wisteria...

    Cloudy Tank...

Well, Green water is not a bad thing for the fishies. I have had green water so thick that unless the fish were pressed against the front of the glass you could not see them. But I digress - The green water, or pea soup, is an algae bloom. Free floating planktonic single celled algae is what...

    Question About A Preventative Med.

Aquairum are very funny about adding anything being a closed environment and all - especially chemicals that can slowly build up and at a certain point recombine to form other chemicals. Think about the chain reaction in the tank cycling - build up of ammonia, bacteria form, eat ammonia...

Brown Stuff Growing On Tufa Rock

Lots of good posts and discusions on brown algae so you may want to check those out. I bet that is what you have. Brown algae is a common occurrence in a newly set up aquarium. It is generally caused by too little light, an excess of silicates, an abundance of nutrients, and too little...

Does Anyone Know What These Bad Boys Are?

I really love a plant looks much like yours called "Temple Plant". Hygrophila corymbosa (giant hygro, temple plant) Also known as Nomaphila stricta. Light green leaves, with reddish veins. Easily grows out of the water, where leaves turn dark reddish green. Big plant; makes good...

Yes, sometimes popularly called Tia Plant. Like that lucky bamboo stuff - so like others have said not truly aquatic.

    Canister Filter Positioning Question

I get a bubble flow from my fluval (it is about 3 feet below the tank surface level) on occasion and the cause is always cavatation caused by flow restriction of the intake. For me that restriction is almost always accumulated plant material partially blocking the intake. So just an...

    Algae Problems

If it is spot algae, it will be tuff and most fish just can't peal it off. Your glass will take some elbow grease  . Do a search on this site for algae and you will see some great posts on dealing with it. Do you have live plants? If you happen to I can relate a personal finding...

Using Old Filter Media In New Tank

Keep in mind that the bacteria you desire is on everything in those seasoned tanks - filter media, gravel, plants etc - so transfer as much from old existing tanks as you are comfortable with to your new tank. As I understand it, old water may not transfer much bacteria, but it will provide...

    Condensation Trays

Identical problem here and I considered using flex-glass (a 1/4" clear plastic glass) as a replacement, but ultimately decided against it largely because of two factors. 1. Everytime I clean the real glass it is clear (very clear only for a week but can stay acceptably clear for a month) and...

    Cloudy Tank...

Only one way to pin this down a little and that is water test for ammonia and nitrItes. Sounds like you are still cycling and water changes are needed, but the testing will tell you alot about where the cycle is and how much water needs to be changed. Post back the tests and the answers will...

    Ideal Ph For Freshwater Tank?

What fish & plants are in the tank? What size tank? You know, consistancy in pH is almost more important than what level it is unelss you are breeding fish. If your pH will tend to always be 8.0 you might try to find plants that will be good at the akaline end of the scale. Most fish can and...

Old Seashells In The Fw Aquarium

Although you would think all dead material would be out of the shell after so long a time, things can really get into some of those small twists and turns and just be dryed waiting for some water to rehydrate them. You have to be very watchful of seeing signs of cloudy water for a while. Even...

    Ph

Tufa is a great buffer - I have two fist size pieces in a 90 gallon and they do a great job of keeping my pH stable at about 6.8-7.0. I run C02 so it has a constant battle keeping the tank from moving to the acid side, but works well...

    Common Plecs

I have kept a good many pleco's and the personalities range, but currently I have two that are very active all over the tank most of the day, and one that stays hidden until nite or makes an appearance if a good veggie or wafer are offered. Maybe this is a time to define "active". I am not...

    Api Water Softener Pillow

A.> I presume this sits in the Cannister filter? I placed mine in the cannister. I know of people who place it in the tank and also I have a friend who uses a small "in the corner filter" with just the softner in it. He runs the filter only when the hardness starts to go up, but it sits in...

    This Is A Good One!

One of my favorite quotes is "Trust everyone, but brand all your cattle" - OK yes, I am from Texas. I do think as others have said you have to weigh it all - but forums have some pretty bad reps. How many of you when searching for solid information checked out the Yahoo/Google (you name it)...

    Glowlight Tetras

    Cleaning Charcoal

IMO, there is no effective way to clean "used" charcole, but I think I understand yours is not "used" but just has lots of extra fine charcole powder? Yes, I have had many a pack provided with filters that have that problem and you can just rinse the dust off. You can rinse it in clean water...

    Green Water!

I have used Diatom filters for a long time as part of a regular monthly maintenance program. It will clear out the worst green water in about an hour in a 90 gallon tank. Diatoms even filter ich and other parasites out of the water and it has no effect on water chemistry. You do have to treat...

    Can I Have A Moan

Sounds to me like you are at the “right pointâ€￾ to convert from thinking of an aquarium as a “self maintainingâ€￾ system to the fact that we are in constant maintenance. For me, my aquarium is like a garden. You can fiddle with it too much and make a working mess of it, or do too little...

    Airstone

Just an observation - if you have your tank top glass covered you will likely get a good supply of water on the cover and that being the closest to the light source, a crop of algae will appear. If you happen to have live plants and the algae does not have nutrients to grow, you will still get...

    Algea In Filter Pipes?

There is a difference between "normal" and "good". Given the circumstances you described it does seem normal, but depending on the type of algea it may not be good. Anyway you can look at pictures of the algea and ID it? Your darkening the filter is a good idea and may eliminate the algea...

    Substrate Problem?

I have a setup that is similar - with pea gravel over a laterate base - there are two times I have some material I don't expect come up the cleaner tube: 1. I have pushed the cleaner tube into the gravel too deeply and pulled up some loose laterate; 2. I have an algae patch holding some...

    Driftwood Soaking Question

Although Don did not say it, I would still soak the wood in your water as you prepare it for water changes in your tank. It will help replace the "creek" water with your typical chemical composition that you do water changes with. Just an observation, I once did a placement of bog wood found...

    Pea Green Water

Do a search in the forum for "Green Water". I have personally experienced water so green you could not see past the front glass. I think the fish loved it... For me it was a result of a bright room (no direct sun) but about 3 watts per gallon on lighting and lots of plant ferterlizer. Wow...

    Large Water Changes.

If you can get the reserve in a position to syphon you can take an air line or two and start a very slow refill back to the tank. Shouldn't be any problems. I use that system and the "take out" of water is maybe 15 minutes. I start the syphon and walk away for about 3 hours.

New Set Up Using 2 Cannisters ?

It might make a difference if you have live plants and I am presuming you have a fish stock that would be ok with constant fast moving water? You can actually stress fish with no calm waters to rest in. Also just a thought (from a planted tank prospective) the water action will release C02...
