Planning on a 46g bow front tank which will most likly be a but overstocked like my current 20g(20 plus fishes and clean as a whistle) but way plan on ruining 2 cannister, I've heard about running each with different media's in each what are the benefits to this and are there any down sides to this. And last but not least is it really worth it? Thanx in advance sbd for the record some of the fishes from the 20g are moving into the 46g when it's up and running

It might make a difference if you have live plants and I am presuming you have a fish stock that would be ok with constant fast moving water? You can actually stress fish with no calm waters to rest in. Also just a thought (from a planted tank prospective) the water action will release C02 more quickly from the tank making a planted tank a bit more difficlut. If you were adding C02 u would be defeating ur self. There are assorted advantages from the "back up" this gives you, but I must admit I have never had a canister go out unexpectedly and that may be off set by the increased odds of "something happening" (like a hose leak which I also have never had happen). For my money, it would not be worth it - I would get the correct size filter for the tank and barring any special needs of the fish (particularily dirty, cold water tank etc) use the saved funds to buy something else.

So if its to a vote, get one canister slightly bigger than required for your tank (I like fluval 305's) and claim the one you are not getting as a carbon credit.
