This Is A Good One!

I work in an LFS and it does annoy me a little when you get people thinking they know everything. Hlowever, the LFS I work in is great towards this forum, we hold forum meetings there and have many regulars from this forum visit it. Moderator George Farmer being one.

sometimes i have to agree with them, you can't trust everything written on the internet, people can take advice from me or anyone else but in all honesty, how many of you can say you know me, have seen my tanks in person so know they're well looked after and i know my stuff?? not more than a handful, so how can you trust me? simple answer is you can't.

everything you hear or get told on a forum should be backed up by independant research.

i see some people here everyday dishing out shockingly bad advise and have found many widly inaccurate websites so i'm not surprised people in the lfs's get a bit sick of hearing 'oh this website told me it was ok'

there's a certain amount of unwillingness to change amongst the older fishkeeping generation, some of them will simply not believe that there is any better way to run a tank than an undergravel filter and as few water changes as possible, so when you try and convince them you should do maintenance weekly and fishless cycle your tanks and other 'new fangled techniques from the internet' they dig they're heels in and say it's not the best way. I should add though I don't want you to think I think all older fishkeepers are like this, just a small proportion

Im a new lfs employee. And boy can I tell you how my whole outlook has changed from being a fish keeper, to working in a store. Having to deal with some customers is pretty ruff  but do my best to cope with them. I always recommend my costomers to this forum. when I give them my buisness card I wright the url on the back.

thanks, im one of those lfs members ;)

my opinion is that there are three possible reasons why they may feel this way:

a) they think they already know enough that they dont need to go somewhere to learn more

B) they dont really care about it as they are only in the job for the money and couldnt give a rats

or c) they dont have the internet!!!

this place has been invaluable since i first started posting here. i was doing ok before in certain areas but since coming here i have come along in leaps and bounds with regards to knowledge in all areas of the hobby. this is exactly why i think all lfs staff should come to places like this.

thats my 2c worth :)
you sound like one of the good guys......friend :drinks: (oh, and I go for B )

i like to think i am :p i am a believer in the saying that knowledge is power so the more research i do etc the more powerful you become at what you are doing :) learning is an integral part of life and somewhere like this is a great place to start that learning, followed up by internet research, books etc

One of my favorite quotes is "Trust everyone, but brand all your cattle" - OK yes, I am from Texas.

I do think as others have said you have to weigh it all - but forums have some pretty bad reps. How many of you when searching for solid information checked out the Yahoo/Google (you name it) fish forums or "alt.bianaries.aquairum" (or whatever) and saw the tripe being served daily (even hourly) there? You might agree with me that there are more weak forums than robust out there, so odds are against you finding good advise unless you really evaluate and investigate. I can only imagine the kinds of things LFS hear people say they learned from forums that are beyone the pale of truth or reason.

Did you think (as I did) that when you landed at TFF it was special? I am afraid many stop at the first group they come to and don't search out the most knowledable. This is a "self correcting" forum because of the strong members. *ok brace your self* There is also an intangible bond between members of some forums and you can sense that here. You can't make a statement without a dozen others checking that what you have said makes sense from their experience. You also have the sense of like minded people really wanting you to succeed. This isn't the only forum I check, but it is one of a very few I respect for the forum quality, members knowledge and helpful comments.

I think the smart LFS also access forums like this one and serves up info like a pro everytime.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that found this forum before the others... and I don't even remember how! :hyper:

To think, my whole fish obsession started because of one lonely betta I had gotten for my daughter when she was fully toilet trained... and was subsequently killed when we went away for a holiday and my husband accidently left the windows open... the poor thing froze to death  . I felt so badly!! I vowed that I'd do better for the next one, bought a Marineland Eclipse Six and heater, and read practically EVERYTHING on the Betta Talk website. Then I decided I wanted other fish too.... Now I'm debating my husband to allow me to get a 10 gal from my brother-in-law (we live in an apartment where pets aren't allowed, so I can't get any bigger tanks... when we get a house on the other hand.. lol)

I have no clue how I found this site, google may have been involved, but I truly don't remember. I'm just glad I did, cause the things I have learned... This is just a terrific site, and I just want to thank all the experienced fishkeepers on the site who answe all our questions! Thanks guys! Some of us couldn't do it without you! :good:
