    Moving To A Bigger Tank

Hi there folks, Need some guidance in timing in when to move tanks. Currently I have a Rekord 70 (2') with built in filter but have just bought a 4' tank and an eheim internal filter. I have 2/3 rds filled the 4' tank with mixture of water from my old tank and fresh water (dechlorinated)...

    Lill Swordtail In Filter

I have a Rekord 70 with the inbuilt filters. The filters are not square to fit neatly in the corners of the tank but they leave a little triangle about 1cm each side in the corner that doesn't face into the tank. I found a fry stuck in there. It could only straight up, flip over and swim...

    Agressive Neon

I ended up having to get some danios to be dither fish as my XL female platy was being a bit of a bossy boot. It has worked as she has calmed down a lot and given confidence to the other fish who used to cower in the corner.

How And Why Do "dither" Fish Work?

In my tank I have a brute of a platy; a huge female one and she ran the tank. She kept all the neons cowering at the back. She kept the other two female platies on a short leash, where ever they were she wasn't happy with them and used to chase them. Now I read that dither fish...

Why Are My Guppies Trying It On With My Platies?

Hi all, a silly question I know but just want to make sure. I have 3 red platy females. I also have two male guppies, orange fantails. The guppies are following my platies around and are trying to inseminate them, even though 1 platy, Big Momma, is huge in comparison. Will they succeed?

How Often Do You Test Your Water?

Once a week just before a water change. Then if anything comes up a bit high then it informs me on how much of a water change to do. If nitrates are running high then, more frequent water changes are needed. Hope this helps. Cheers Xanthe

    Top Swimmers

I was in the same situation as you. I ended up getting golden zebra danios; fast moving so be careful if any of your tank is easily spooked. Guppies, though the amles can nip each others tails. Platies I had any way. They move all around the tank but tend do keep nearer the top. All good...

Trapped: The Trouble With Built In Filters

Whilst doing my weekly water change I always take the background off and drop the hood with light down the back of the tank, so I can still see what I'm doing in the tank. When my 9 year old son said "there's a platy fry stuck." Sure enough there was. As the built in filter...

    Apple Snail Shell Corroding

I have used coral sand but didn't find it that effective. It didn't raise the ph level at all. I even tried using ph7 stabiliser but that didn't work either. I think until the tannin in the bogwood leaches out it will lower the ph continuously. I found buffering to little effect. Hope it...

    Plants Keep Floating

Cheers. When you say plant them sideways, is that so there is more of the stem under the sand and or gravel. Then these can grow new roots as well. Thanx Xanthe

    Plants Keep Floating

Hi there, a really basic question which I am most embarassed about. My plants keep escaping especially the one planted in the sand. The two planted in the gravel do hang on a bit better. I have seen in Pets at Home they have wee terracotta weights to house the plants and keep them submerged...

    Apple Snail Shell Corroding

Hi there, There is a difference in water hardness and ph, can't remember what it is though at the mo. So you might want to be checking the ph of your water as it is better for the snails if it is at least a ph of 7 or more. If they are in water that is below ph7 then that is where the...

    Cracked Apple Snail Shell

If you scroll down the list of forums you will find a forum for invertebrates and the like. Neon Tetra Feeding Problems

Hi Jonh, I have the same problem as my platys(top feeders) are greedy and keep the neons from getting the food. What I did was crush the flaked food into really small bits. That way the bigger fish don't have command over the food. Its smaller so it sinks quicker to where my neons...

    Gravel Vacuuming, How Often?

If you have snails, apple snails etc, you will need to hoover more often as snails are quite the little poo machines  , maybe that's why you've heard 2-3 times a week. But as andywg was saying, depends on occupants and filters n stuff. I do mine once a week with the water change. I've...

    Frog Question

Hi there and welcome. I only have a little experience with ADF'S and they both died. I had mine in my community tank with neon tetras, platys and corydoras. The mix was fine although one platy took time to adjust to them being there. The tank was 18" deep and they were fine getting to...

    Water Too Soft

Thanks guys, its actually for my snails as the acidity corrodes their shells. But when you mentioned wood Barracuda, I have bogwood which will have been preserved in peaty acidic water. A lightbulb has gone on. Next moves are get rid of filter, get some limestone and take my wood out. Cheers.

    Water Too Soft

Hi there, I have posted this in the invert column as well but as it is about water being too soft, I thought I could get some advice here too. I have apple snails and if the water is too soft, I live in Scotland the ph is 6.6, the shells get corroded. I have put in coral sand but that hasn't...

    Water Too Soft For Snails

Hi there, I live in Scotland and the water is really soft ph6.6 and it is affecting my apple snails shells, corosion. I have put in coral sand to try and lift the ph but not to an extent that I can measure. I have started using PH7, the additive that is meant to raise the ph and buffer it...

Fish Breathing Fast And At The Top

Yes did use dechlorinator and no i don't use CO2. Was wondering about the hot weather but the temp of the water has not risen, whether that has anything to do with it. I know the ambient air temp has definitely risen so does that decrease oxygen in the water. I do have another filter that i...

Hi there, I have a Rekord 70 tank with the built in heater and filter in the enclosed black box. I have been told that because it is built in that there is a tendency for a lot of gunk to build up at the bottom. Is it worth taking out the filter n heater, if so, how easy is it? If I do take...
