cleaning out the external filter today i found this little guy
filterbaby.jpg

strangely he was the lucky one, all the others having been eaten.

got him in a bucket at the mo
dont know what to do with him-put him in either tank he will 99%probly get eaten, and because it has servived in the filter i feel i owe it...ill ring the LFS tomorro and see if they have a babie tank

im guessing that finding babies in the filter is quite common...anyone found anything good in there filters/sumps?

I once found a 1'' Rosy Barb in my undergravel filter uplift tube. I used to have a pair in that tank (which has since been taken down and re-set up) . He must have survived in complete darkness with his sole diet being his brothers and sisters

My Black Neons loved swimming in the current, but one tiny one overshot sometime between lights off and lights on and I was so worried that one had died(I'd just got back into Fishkeeping and it would've been a major blow for me)but we checked the filter as we'd lost many fish to it due to them getting stuck in the pipe and there he was happily swimming about! So we netted him out and got him back in the main tank. They stopped swimming so actively after that.

Every time we've had fry, some of them have ended up in the filter. Some have survived, some haven't. Our Khuli loaches love our filter, and our killifish is regularly found in there. Not a nice place to live, but inebitable at some point if there are big enough gaps in the filter.

What a cute little swordtail~! I'm sure I've had baby guppies sucked up into my filter but I have never come across one. If they were sucked up in there, they'd probably get sucked up into the fan and cut up. D: Think Finding Nemo style fan, all moving swirly and fast... poor little guys!!

My main tank filter is about one and a half foot tall and has a couple of inches of water at the top, so i often find guppy and platy fry in there who have taken shelter in the filter (they can easily get in and out, its an unusual filter design)- the most unusual fish i have found in there was a leopard danio swimming around in the filter at the top.

I had some molly fry stuck in the sponges mostof then were dead but i got one in time and put him in the breeder trap.

i had a cory jump in my breeding trap and the platty fry chased here (god knows how) it isnt all that big but as soon as the fry went near she would go crazy lol

I have a Rekord 70 with the inbuilt filters. The filters are not square to fit neatly in the corners of the tank but they leave a little triangle about 1cm each side in the corner that doesn't face into the tank. I found a fry stuck in there. It could only straight up, flip over and swim straight down. But with a 8" bread knife I managed to prise it away from the tank enough for him to escape. He is now called Spartacus.

I just rescued a Danio and a neon tetra from my magnum filter, they were seen in the morning, and gone when I returned from work. My wife and I though the worst...... until I opened the cabinet for food, and saw the pair swimming in circles along the side of the filter. I shut it down, and saved two lives

I then realized the end of the filter tube (strainer) had fallen of and was wedged behind a decoration. well., I fixed that and Zip-tyed it in place.

Crazy to think what the current in there must have been like for the poor little guys.

Also..... I once found a neon tetra stuck on the filter strainer, And I hope this was not the cause of his demise. I found one (strainer) with more vents, And I hope it is less suction since it has 3 times more vented area to suck through. I think it is working, No more fishies stuck to the new strainer.

Otherwise I thought of putting a piece of stocking nylon over it, but worry that it would plug up to quickly.

Have a great day!!!

Hi

We have two botias who live in the filter housing. Thought they were dead on more than one occasion - we sometimes do not see them for months. We have a Juwel and they go in and out the hole where the outlet pipe is. they seem very happy!!!

Very scary when cleaning filter!!

Found one of my red tail botias lying ontop of the powerhead a few years ago... yep, he was out of the water. Push him back in and he swam off. He was jumping alot that previous night and he must have got himself stuck there.

lol thats similar to what one of my cories did when i had an internal he jumped and landed ontop of it i prodded him with a net and he dived off into the water, but my cory had only been there for about 30 seconds than a whole night.
