I watched my Betta for about an hour this morning, he was in every area of the tank, swam the length of the tank several times, behind the heater, around the filter, he even poked his nose in the pleccy cave and came out again.

Thats unbelievable, i take it those are for export to other countries ?

There is definitely this perception that Betta's can live in very small spaces, and don't need any much care other than some flake dropped in, sort of similar to they way some keep goldfish, very sad.

Would an option be to just leave the eggs and see if they hatch in the tank ? would you need caves etc for that ?

I think so yes there was a group of about 3 or 4 males endlers that chased and hassled it the whole time, must have been stressful for the guppy so that's why I ported him in along with the betta, thankfully the betta pays no attention to the guppies, 60 litre as well so plenty of space.

I put a black molly in with the betta a few days back and it immediately started Gill flaring then spent the whole time chasing and nipping at the molly, so I removed the molly to another tank with the endler females.

Thanks, I actually moved it into a different tank as I didn't want anymore breeding, he's in the 60L with Betta and another guppy that is definetly male but that fish doesn't bother it.

I think this is a female guppy, initially thought it was male then noticed it getting chased a lot by male endlers.

After a lot of looking at different tanks I decided he's maybe best staying where he is?

All the external walls and roof are insulated with Kingspan boards, problem is the door isn't very tight so the drafts flow through, i plan to erect a stud wall in one end insulate that and fit a door to that area, then ill have my own area just with the tanks, which i can heat for less cost...

My tanks are in an garden shed/cabin, great place to have them, downside is i don't heat it at the moment so the temp will reduce in winter which would have a big impact in the event of a power cut.

It all depends on the load though , if you have large heaters that will drain it faster, maybe best focusing on the air if the fish can handle the temp dropping, difficult situation hope the power is restored soon

how many pumps ? , you could get a 12v car battery , connect it to a 12v to 240 v inverter, cycle it on and off to make it last longer.

Hi, For cleaning the glass inside i use a new stanley knife blade, just be careful when your near the corners as you don't want to damage the silicone, move the blade down the glass and the algae will be gone, have to watch the fish also when working with the blade.

That's a good idea, my filter in his current is a Ciano CF80 which produces quite a good flow though i have reduced it by adding an extra sponge to slow it up.

With the drag from swimming i take it id be better with a sponge filter rather than a filter pump with a constant flow ?, thinking ill go for 10 gallon now, Betta only. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

That's kind of what i thought, I am more inclined to go for the next size up which would be a 25litre, some of the tanks you see for Betta's look quite cruel with really small spaces for them to live. Did you keep any other small fish with the Betta or Betta only ?

I would say Angel fish, just never really liked them.

Hi, How soon should you know their sex and at what age can they start breeding ? Having a bit of a population explosion, Ive separated everything that's noticeably male or female but have loads of fry that ill need to get out once i know. Thanks Stuart
