What's the best substrate for a garden pond ?

If you are looking for aesthetics, river rocks or pea gravel look great. Most of us don't use any substrate. Plants are rooted in pots. How large is your pond?

I prefer nothing so they are easier to clean.

Ill get the size tomorrow, i think roughly 2.5 x 1.4 metres but it has a deep end in it,
