How did you get into the hobby?

Back when I was little, my parents got my granddad's old fish tank, think it was around 4ft from what I remember. Had a common plec and some clown loaches. My dad's always been into fishkeeping too, kept oscars, panaques, a featherfin squeaker, and pretty much every other fish that the 90s...

all of a sudden with my amanos are many really tiny snails.

Basically, you put a slice of blanched cucumber in your tank. It sinks to the bottom, and the snails are attracted to it. It doesn't work as well for me, I feed the tank and when the snails come out I use a flour shaker to scoop them up from the sand. However, I've heard it does work for a lot...

    not celestial pearl danios

They're different fish. Pearl danios are considered sub-tropical and prefer temperatures of 18-24c. Celestial pearls prefer warmer temperatures between 22-26c. Pearls aren't necessarily coldwater, but if you meant sub-tropical then go ahead. Obviously make sure your parameters are good for...

What Fruits and Veggies Can Go in the Tank?

Apologies, this was an incredibly old thread from when I'd first gotten into fishkeeping. I'm fully aware of the whole "misleading" thing now, but I suppose I didn't take that into consideration when replying to an almost year-old thread. I keep plecs, giant African fan shrimp, clown loaches...

What Fruits and Veggies Can Go in the Tank?

Bumping this post since I need some more info! Pocoyo, the sailfin, loves courgette/zucchini! Used an old suction cup to anchor a chunk to the bottom of the glass and it didn't take long for him to power on through it. Didn't see much action from the clown loaches or others aside from the chunk...

all of a sudden with my amanos are many really tiny snails.

Bladder snails, as has already been stated. Personally don't like them because they overbreed pretty quickly and are considered pest snails. They come in on plants at times, I find that they're most common on the amazon swords that I get from my LFS. They're not harmful to fish but can eat your...

How many posts are made on here each day..?

Oh dear!! I guess we both got quite lucky, this was my first forum too. Tried a few entomology forums but they are chocka-block of very old men who only speak on a highly scientific level about genera that I've never even heard of. Lucking out isn't too bad though if it means this is where we...

    New hobby, new forum, hello!

I would totally go for live plants! I'm absolutely dreadful at keeping plants alive, but I think anubias are pretty easy to keep (well, hard to kill) and look great. Slow growers but rewarding in my opinion. For quick and easy plants, valisneria and elodea densa are easy too, and add a lot of...

    Smallest Pleco

Got one of those too! It hitchhiked in a bag of rummynose tetras when I last got fish. Considering getting some more if I end up rehoming my red tail. They are absolutely adorable though, a nice change from standard corydoras.

    New hobby, new forum, hello!

Welcome! Feel you on the hard water thing, living in the South East lol. Would love to see your tank when it's set up!

    Smallest Pleco

Yeah, which is why they can be hard to keep. Very greedy little fellers and you hear horror stories of them rejecting algae wafers and only feeding off of real algae. I found them hard to keep alive, went from six to one and now the sole survivor is fat and happy in my 230L.

    Smallest Pleco

Hm, iirc clown plecs are very small. Between 3-4 inches, very attractive species and tolerates a more neutral, even slightly alkaline water unlike some other species. Generally peaceful and won't pick fights with other fish. Provide shelter in the form of caves or tunnels, as well as driftwood...

    Anniversary Gift from my Partner

So, my partner and I celebrated our third anniversary recently, and we each got each other a little gift. I got him a Jellycat polar bear plush, and he got me this: Adorable plec plush! It's 12" long so it's a pretty realistic size as far as that goes. It's got a suction cup on the mouth which...

    Im legally changing my name....

I know this is a very old post but looking through this thread was a shock with how people are treating and reacting to the possibility of a member being trans here. I assume that the Allison person you're talking about wants to be referred to using she/her/herself pronouns considering the...

    Im legally changing my name....

Erin Grace sounds better imo, if we're still on that topic. Names starting with vowels in tandem with another sound kind of "gimicky" if that makes sense, so I think Grace would be better than Isabella.

Hear you on the tooth pain, been suffering from it every single day for a full year now, keeps you up at night and it hurts to the point where nothing gets your mind off of it. Teeth are ridiculous aren't they? You live up to a hundred years and over and your teeth last 50 at the very best.

    amano shed?

Yep, totally normal. Softer water conditions can ease shedding for shrimp, so that might be what you read about with the tank conditions thingy. Do amanos turn red like giant African fan shrimp do during shedding? When they shed, the astaxanthin turns a salmon colour. Pretty cool actually...

Looks like a false zebra as opposed to king tiger. King tigers seem to have "tighter" stripes along the body and dorsal fin, whereas false zebras have more spaced out stripes - particularly on the dorsal fin - like yours. The stripes appear brighter than those on a false zebra (L129), but...

    Identify this pleco?

I agree w/ DD. Think the longfin green dragon suggestion is closer than calico/choc mix since the tones seem way too dull and the white accents too striking. The green dragons seem to have the same thick, raised armour that I pointed out on this one, as well as the white fringes on the tail and...

    Pokémon Game

That's Pokemon Go from the sounds of it. It's an AR game that doesn't really reflect the other games well. To me, Pokemon's fun because you get to catch little guys and raise them.

    Betta has had enough!

Without any intention to patronise, you shouldn't only look out for the betta being aggressive. As you've said, the cardinals are nipping at his fins. This can stress him out and leave him withdrawn. Even if it's hard to detect just from looking at him, stress can really do a number on fish...

    Identify this pleco?

My partner (who knows a little about plecs through my excessive info-dumping) suggested that it could be a cross-breed. The size and general look suggests it could be similar to a (longfin) BNP, but the ridges along the back aren't typical of a BNP, and like you said it doesn't have the...

'Never Listen to Pet Store Workers'

I totally agree, both on the research part and having meaningful conversations. Once you get past the initial customer-worker interaction too, I find that you can get really "intimate" (for lack of better word, I know how bad that sounds!) with them. One person I'll never fault is my previous...

'Never Listen to Pet Store Workers'

Yeah, I assumed at first that it wouldn't be the "ideal job" but I didn't really recognise how crummy it would be until I was waist deep in it lol. Again like, I know this happens in most retail industries but I'm glad I got in and out of it when I was young and didn't spend my life aspiring to...

    Identify this pleco?

I think this might be right, from looking at pics. And again, looking at the pics, it seems to be a pretty young one. Not sure if it's just your camera or it's got really stark white lines, looks gorgeous.

Oh wow, this one's sailed past me for a while, so glad I looked. The axolotls are totally beyond what I've seen online before, so strange and pretty! The translucent tummy where you can see their insides is so cool, too! Can see it with my blue phantom plec, always really interesting to look at...

80 litre tank on first floor

My old manager told me that. Just imagine the weight of having a second bath upstairs and see how you feel about it. If it doesn't feel like the floor gonna cave in beneath you, should be fine lol. Got my 230L upstairs against load bearing wall. Occasional creaks where it's settling in but...

Never listen to pet store workers. Doesn't matter if it's a specialised fish shop or a general pet shop or a guy selling you fish from the back of a van.
