Im legally changing my name....

I like Erin Isabella 🙂. Have you tried ‘signing’ these names to see which one of the signatures feels best/you prefer the look of..?

@itiwhetu - we are a fairly friendly, non-judgemental, and (mostly I would think) unknown in the real world group. So in my mind perfect for fine tuning this big decision before going out into the real world of people you know.

May I suggest and really confusing, as everyone has a different idea. So, when the name is chosen, some people here will be delighted, others will feel dejected. Which is not a good thing.

That’s the biggest difficulty with online, written communications. You never get to understand how ‘invested’ other people are with their replies. I can only speak for me, and from my point of view I have given my preference for the new name, I’m happy to be part of the process and to think that my thoughts might have helped the OPs deliberations, but at the end of the day, as you quite rightly pointed out, it’s their personal choice. I will not be celebrating or dejected depending on which option is chosen, just hoping the OP is happy with their decision and it impacts their life in the way they hope it will.

*Sigh* I just am canvasing my fish-fanatics friends opinion! I've been here for almost 3 years. I have friends here. No one will feel dejected since its just an opinion and everyone understands that. If you don't like the discussion please mute the thread or ignore it.

I just assumed you were changing gender. A guy I've known for over 20 yrs (my husband actually hired him and both of them were brilliant - but my husband passed away 3 or so years ago and Brian - now "Allison" is doing contract work and trying to raise a rather confused son right now It will all work out). He is looking like quite a different person - and this low-key almost depressed person has come out of his/her shell and is just delighted with living life as a woman. Total shock to me but he is so happy and outgoing - it completely changed his personality. Even if it's not gender reassignment I'd just go with Raven - it sounds the most Gender neutral and pretty cool.
I know this is a very old post but looking through this thread was a shock with how people are treating and reacting to the possibility of a member being trans here. I assume that the Allison person you're talking about wants to be referred to using she/her/herself pronouns considering the situation you've presented, so use the correct pronouns. It is NOT that difficult to respect people as they are, rather than treating them like an alien just because you find it fascinating or unusual. Being trans is not the circus freak show act it used to be, so why is it being treated like it's such a hilarious and absurd idea here?

I think they were reacting to my reply. I'm straighter than the back of God. In my case, it is funny since I am DEFNINITLY NOT. But in general I don't think its a funny condition or anything like that. Everyone deserves respect and love. Also I'm the 5th person in my family to change their name for a reason other than marriage....so yeah....it runs in the family.

First, I haven't read the whole thread. I mean, as far as I know, you aren't a fish!

I'd suggest you check the US census section on names by year. There are fashions, and I once taught a class with 5 guys with one name and 7 women with another. It was a little confusing and complex when I wanted to address one person and six more turned their heads. It's always good to check to see if you are looking at a name that a lot of other people suddenly have. I say that as a just after the boomers "Gary". There were 3 of us in my elementary class, but in my entire teaching career, I never had one in my class. I'm really out of fashion, and sooo mid century.

Many parents have told me of wonderful, distinct names they've chosen, only for the kid to later discover it was the number one name for their age group across their country.

I did look into this!! Erin in the 520th most popular name for a girl!! I've only met 2 other Erin's in my life and seen a few on TV. In Ireland its EXTEMELY popular, in Northern Ireland its the 5th most popular name and in the rest of Ireland its the 37th most popular. But I'm not Irish and I have not intention of visiting the Emerald Isle any time soon so I'm good :)

It's one I see a lot in Canada. In fact, the head of the Conservative Party here, a male, is named Erin. But you won't be blamed for him.

I've had a few friends change their names over the years, for various excellent reasons. Go for it!

Trying to imagine if one of my daughters told me they hated my choices and want to change there name lots of thought and time went into naming my children . Funny thing is I haven’t really heard my own name in a while iv found as life moves on your name isn’t part of your identity, 70% of the time my name is Dad ,probably the second most common name behind Mom to hear my Birth Government name makes me feel alien sometimes
