    Better Nitrate Test?

I use the Salifert tests, you would normally find them with the marine bits and pieces, but they're good for freshwater too.   The thing about using local water authority data is that it is only accurate for the sample that they have taken, which may not be quite the same as what is currently...

    Out Of Tank Fish Breeders.

And these are where you are putting the guppies that you have had problems breeding? If so, it seems likely that the stress of being confined to such a small space is causing them to abort their fry.

    Cpd's/galaxy Rasbora Killed The Others

The dead fish would have been pecked at by the live one(s) anyway, so that's not really any evidence.    The LFS guy would not want to admit that he'd recommended a poor set up, my personal opinion matches that of Ch4rlie - a 5gallon is too small for CPDs.   I would suggest that your return the...

    My Fish Are Dying

Were those readings taken from the established tank, or from the quarantine tank after the fish deaths? Although you've used water from the established tank, you don't appear to have taken any bacteria or filter media from the established tank. However, the lack of bacteria would mean that you...

Help Please What's Wrong With My Male Platy

I may be a little late to this, especially as you haven't logged back in since 3rd December, but when you say he's acting strange, can you describe what his behaviour is, please.

Is Quick Start Killing My Fish?

Akasha is right. Each tank has a colony or two of bacteria that are big enough to process the ammonia produced by the fish, and no more. If you add more fish, more ammonia will be produced, so your bacterial colonies are insufficient. With an immature tank, the bacterial colonies will take a...

Male Guppy On Bottom Of Tank, Help?

Hi Liberty, could you check the nitrate reading, please, as most nitrate tests aren't accurate down to tenths of a ppm. Do you mean nitrite?       Life is all about opinions. You've asked for other people's, and they will tell you what they genuinely believe. Whether you choose to accept their...

    Musk Turtle

Welcome to the forum. I have moved your post into its own topic, mainly because the thread you posted in is on a completely different topic, but also because we generally have one question per thread - it makes it easy to follow who has said what to who in response to what.   I'm not an expert...

    Lfs Massacre

I have just hidden three posts in this thread, whilst the Moderation Team discuss their suitability.    This may mean that some replies that are still visible may not make some sense, and I apologise for this.   Can I just point out to all members my post earlier in this thread.     One of the...

Is Quick Start Killing My Fish?

I don't know if the Quick Start is causing your issues, but why are you using it? Leaving aside the whole debate as to whether it is actually effective or not, once your tank is cycled, you don't need to be adding any more bacteria.   Are you using a dechlorinator as well as the Quick Start?

    Lfs Massacre

As bad reviews go, it's an objective one. It only gives specific details of a specific visit. I think we can all narrow down the shop to one of the two rather large pet retailers in the US - not sure we really need to go any further than that.   What can get the forum into trouble, is when...

    Aussie Christmas

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas if it wasn't dark, dismal, raining and windy, but just a bit too warm for snow.   Just shut up with your Christmas barbecues on the beach, OK? I am not in the slightest bit jealous. No. Definitely not.

    New Tank Stocking Options

Completely disagree with much of that. As Munroco said, mollies and guppies are also hardwater fish, so the issue there is the same as with the platies. I also feel you need to be more specific about what type of algae eater you are recommending.      I guess once the fish settle they will...

    New Tank Stocking Options

I've always subscribed to the theory that a large shoal of one species looks better, and behaves more naturally, than smaller shoals of 2 species, so since you've already got green neons, I personally would get more of those. But that's just me.   Your issue is with the platies, these being...

Urgent! Please Help Me Find Out What's Wrong With My Fish!

Hello, I have moved this to the Emergencies section.   First off, we will need to know tank water parameters:- ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, along with the tank water pH.   Have you made any changes to the tank recently, eg new fish, new decor, new plants?   How often do you change water...

    Zebra Fish Dying

No, I don't think ammonia at that level would do that to the fish that quickly. Had you already changed some water in that tank prior to taking the reading? If so, then the ammonia reading at the time would have been significantly higher, so that would probably explain it. However, if not...

    Ich Advice

OK, fair enough.   Can you post a photo of the ghost shrimp? They are normally very placid creatures, but occasionally, retailers sell macrobrachium shrimp as ghost shrimp, and they really are vicious. In particular, I'd like a decent view of their front legs. A macrobrachium has elongated front...

    Sudden Death Of Guppies

    Zebra Fish Dying

It would be wise to do so, I think. That way, you can eliminate people misinterpreting what is shown on the test - you match the colour to the levels on the card, and then post the results up here (ammonia is really the only one we'll be interested in, but test for nitrite and nitrate as well)...

    Am I Crazy?

Wouldn't have thought so. The daphnia aren't intelligent enough to realise that they need to stay amongst the leaf litter to not be eaten.

    Zebra Fish Dying

See, this is why we don't like multiple posts on the same topic.   The previous two posts (mine and Ch4rlie's) have been moved from the OP's other thread, on the same topic. That thread has now been deleted.

    Ich Advice

I think it's whitespot, aka ich, if you click on the photo, it opens up slightly larger, and it doesn't appear to me that the fish's scales are protruding, but it does appear to have white grains on the surface.   Simply raising the temperature of the tank simply speeds up the metabolism of the...

    Sudden Death Of Guppies

Sorry, Robert, can you clarify please - you say you only have guppies, but then talk about platies, endlers and fantails. All 4 of these fish types are separate species (although guppies and endlers are very closely related). Fantails are a coldwater fish.   Could you just list out what you...

    Zebra Fish Dying

I'm not so sure.   The fish are displaying red around the gills which is a classic symptom of ammonia poisoning.  6 stressed zebra danios in a small 10 gallon tank, I think ammonia could build up quickly, especially if they have not had long to acclimatise (both in the 10g and at the retailer)...

  28. the_lock_man

    Am I Crazy?

I don't know the answer, but I'd imagine the colony would be eaten pretty quickly - if a fish sees a small thing move, it eats it. It doesn't worry about whether it's full or not.

    Another New Species To Desire!

If you're anywhere near a Maidenhead Aquatics, then try there, as all their stores near me stock CPDs. If not, maybe ask your chosen LFS to order some in for you, I would imagine they would be very easily obtainable through the wholesale trade.

Power Cut Killed My Fish When I Was On Holidays.

Your bacteria *should* be all right, so long as the temperatures didn't get ridiculously cold - and since you're in the UK, so long as you're not right at the top of Ben Nevis, I don't think things would have been that cold.   The best thing to do would be to get down to Homebase, and get some...

    Fish Dying

The pedant in me wants to point out that if the second part of the scientific name does not have a capital letter, then equally a scientific name should be italicised. But that would be just childish of me. So I shan't point that out at all. No. Definitely not.   :D ;)   All is good
  35. the_lock_man

    Bloated Danio

Without test results, it's very difficult to say, but both method and symptoms point to ammonia poisoning. Leaving the little filter in was the right thing to do, but then you took it out, and all the bacteria with it. You left the tank with a completely uncycled filter.   If you still have the...

    Fish Dying

I broadly agree with the sentiments of Bubbelzzz, the tank is overstocked, and there are some compatibility issues.   The main thing I see is the tiger barbs. Barbs are shoaling species, and we normally recommend any shoaling species to be in a group of at least 6 and preferably more. Tiger...
