Time.
And if that doesn't work a slow prime.
I had this problem earlier today - turned out my inlet pipe was in gunk heaven and needed the hosepipe treatment.
Anyone found a smooth alternative to the Fluval corregated tubing? :/
The same happened to me after 2-3 months. Tank nearly turn to milk.
2 things helped. Intrepet "Green Away" (even though it's white algea) and then a good quality external filter stuffed with filter gloss (wool) to remove all the clumped together particles.
Once I'd added the treatment and the...
Well you could give us a bit more info!
Tank size, filtration, lighting, stock, plants etc etc etc
Filter wool, activated carbon, even a floculating agent can all help. So can avoiding direct sunlight, and/or too much artificial light (>10 hrs/day).
I started out with UGF, a large air pump and 2 air stone driven uprisers.
Once my tank had cycled, I have never had a problem with ammonia or nitrite spikes - I put this down to the large SA deep gravel beds offer, especially when O2 rich water is sucked through them.
My one gripe was that...
I just (about 10 days ago) put some root tabs into the substrate of my tank and I now have to trim some of the plants twice a week
Vegetation looks lush though, and nitrate levels are more managable
I added some "Root Tabs plus Iron" by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals to be exact. They contain "potassium, magnesium, sulphur and iron and First Layer Pure Laterite."

No sand, just gravel. Can't tell you preceisly what it is but it "passed the acid test"....
The only other recent changes were to add some more plants and as the only substrate I have is the gravel I've added some root tablets - maybe that's the cause?
You can definitely see the brown tanin in...
Thanks for that.
My living room and dining room (where the tank is) are not seperated by a wall and I have quite a small terraced house - will those pumps be quiet enough to be on 24/7?
It's not crystaline, I'm judging it to be either iron or mudstone (my geology isn't that strong) although I'm thinking mudstone would be quite weak in comparison and I should therefore be able to seperate the slate into two pieces?
I certainly think it's iron now. Just measured the pH again...
A couple of hours after changing 25% of my water an it's usually down to at least 6.5.
I think that slate was a bad idea....
Love the bogwood (so far...)
I live in a soft water area and hence the pH in my tank has always been lower than that of my tapwater (which has a pH of 7) at around 6 to 6.5. I think this is down to 2 reasons:
1. low buffering capacity of the water; and/or
2. a piece of slate with a brown (iron?) band/vein about 1mm across...
Clown loaches are known for their odd nature - hence their name.
One of my clown loaches sleeps in the outlet from my external filter and the other swims with my silver shark or rest with my corys when he's alone.
Don't worry - enjoy :P
I've recently had the need to use Interpet's Aquarium Treatment No. 6 (White Spot Plus).
It's safe for scaleless fish at full dose (a worry for some people) and did the trick. I'd advise that if yours doesn't work.
The ich in my tank kept coming back so I advise using the treatment at half...
Thanks for that
Thinking of buying my Dad a Canon A70 3.1 megapixel camera for Christmas (then I can nick it to take pics of my aquarium and fish!).
Hopefully I'll achieve the same level of results you have....
Here's what I do:
Just after a rainy night, dig in the garden and retrieve about 10 worms.
Wash them in cold water to get the soil and coating off and calm them down.
Put them in a flora/ice cream container seperated by pieces of kitchen roll.
Wack them into the deep freeze.
Twice a week...
Hmph :(
Maybe I damaged the impeller shaft in my 104 during cleaning and it's causing the impeller to vibrate? Mine is in the tank stand cupboard and I can hear it in the other room when I have the TV on mute
Have to see if I can replace the shaft - they can't be that expensive?
The water quality in my tank since I bought a 104 has been superb.
I ignored the bit in the instructions that tells you which order to put the media in and went this way:
coarse screen > biological > green-X (had a recent white algea bloom) > filter gloss
At the moment I've also got some...
Can anyone recommend a small plant that I can site towards the front of my tank that will spread laterally thus "carpeting" the front of my tank?
I'm looking for something with a touch of colour if possible, well not just plain green...
Thanks in advance.
***Edit***
When I say spread I mean...
