    Is everything normal here?

Well day three and not one change in chemistry. Marineland.com talks about up to a 2ppm Ammonia spike being normal, but I haven't seen one. Of Course I used a lot of Bio-Spira, and not so many fish for the amount of water...

    New Tank - High Ph

My tank went from "somehwere between" 7.5 and 8.0 to "Very close to" 8.0 My tester doesn't have quarter incerements ;) Anyway. IT stabilized at that point and hsan't moved yet (about a week or so). And I chose to listen to the folks that say most hardy fish will acclimitize to the pH. I put...

    Is everything normal here?

Crazy Eddie. I have done quite a bit of reading of other peoples experiences with these. I would say it's like 50-50. But the 50-50 comes down to which product you use. From what I've gathered Bio-Spira is the only one that is really a bacteria in a bottle. The rest are just enzymes or...

    Neons vs Cardinal

Thanks. Yeah, the majority of experienced people seem to be of the opinion that most fish will adapt to the pH, and most sites that sell stuff and have info seem to want you to start fiddiling... good for sales maybe. Anyway. I've got 6 Neons and 6 Rummynoses in there and so far so good. They...

    Is everything normal here?

Thanks for the reply. The Nitrite thing... well I'm pretty sure I'm just being paraniog and seing orange tint in the yellow that just isn't there. Last night the Rummys came out to play. But the Neons looked like they were all going to die... hiding separately, floating backwards in the...

    Is everything normal here?

Well it's about 8 hours later. The Rummys have come out to play. Everyone has had a meal. Two of my neons are MIA, but there are a million hiding places, so fingers crossed. (I've since come to find out that neons were not the best choice for this type of cycling or for any non-established tank...

    Neons vs Cardinal

Well I alreay bought some neons. The LFS near me is pretty nice and has been there since I was a kid. They tell me the pH in all their tanks is prety close to mine and they have a couple of show tanks with very happy healthy Neons and Cardinals. My decision between the two was made by what...

    Is everything normal here?

So I'll let y'all know later how my bio-spira experiment goes. Water before fish: pH = 7.75 Nitrites < .3 GH = 6 KH = 7 Ammonia (NH3/NH4) = 0 Added: 6 1 inch long Rummynose Tetra 6 alf inch long Neons 3 oz. of Bio-Spira (way more than necessary, but they say you can't over dose it) 4 Caps of...

Problem with pump and air stones.

After about an hour of burying and reburying an airline the other day I had a stroke of genius... although I'm sure this is what you are SUPPOSED to do, just that I'm slow sometimes. I would get the line completely buried under 2" of large gravel and 10 minutes later it would work...

    Quietest air pump

Are we talking about the little pumps for toys and air stones etc? I was worried about noise so I was going to order a tetratec or whatever. Then I thought, "I'll just go to petco, buy one, and if it's too loud I'll take it back". Bought a Profile 1500 for $10 and unless I hold it next to my...

    Neons vs Cardinal

So maybe the many reports on various boards about the diseased and weak genetic nature of modern neons is more of a greatly exaggerated rumor or pehnomenon than a real problem?

    Neons vs Cardinal

The number one fish on my son's fish list is Neon Tetra. (Or Cardinal, to him they're the same.) I'm aware they are completely different ;) My question is this: First question: This site (a respected one I think) claims Neons are "Easy" dificulty to care for and Cardinals are "moderate"...

    bio spyra

Bio-Spira has to stay cold. There are places that ship it someone will surely know. But for my money, I'd personally be worried about not being home and having it left on the doorstep. Anyway, here in North Los Angeles the LFS down the street carries it so that's lucky for me. I'd call around...

    Cycling, Bio-Spira, and pH

I don't know much about pH and it dropping like that. Anyway, as far as the Bio-Spira, my understanding is that it's not designd to be used without fish. They are supposed to go in at pretty much the same time. It is supposed to go into water between 7 and 8.5 pH though.

Yeah that's what I thought too after having read nothing like that anywhere. But they were insistent so I figured best to get a second opinion just o be safe. Thanks!

    Question RE: Dwarf Frogs

So my researches had seemed to indicate that African Dwarf Frogs would be fine in a peaceful community tank. But when I mentioned that my ever-changing planning list included Neons or Cardinals someone on another site seemed very concerned that African Dwarf Frogs would eat them. Seems...

    What should I do next

I'm in the same place as Ted'sMom , 4 year old and all, with the exceptions that I did keep a very helth take over 15 years ago. But I think I was at least half lucky! Anyway, let me shortcut you on some of the stuff I've already found in my endless reading and browsing this and other boards...

    OMG...invaded.

It's the balance of an eco system. Unless you are absolutely sure a thing is native to an ecosystem never just release it into it. Most likely the thing will die on it's own or be eaten. But sometimes that thing can end multiply and end up flourishing and pushing some local species of plant or...

The list is still up for debate. Definitely some Corys. Might do Kuhlis and Corys. Almost for sure a school of Harlequin Rasboras. Cardinal Tetra School. Powder Blue Gourami. We want something nice and yellow. Looking at Gold Zebra Danios and Silver Tip Tetras but some have raised a...

They are as fake as it gets. LOL. The most expensive one is about $4.50 for the small Amazon clump. The rest are the Petsmart super budget variety. I like real plants, but I'm in no way ready to deal with them. So if that changes your post, not a big deal!!! :)

That particular one is at Petco. The ship was the killer. The two pieces are like $23 apiece. That rock sure adds a lot of interesting texture and tunnels, IMO, though.
