Remember Bettas are TROPICAL fish. Their normal environment is in shallow water at tropical temps (75-85F) You might get by with a younger betta if the temperature swings a few degrees, but as he ages, he'll be more likely to get an infection if his water temp is not stable.

I've been using the full dose of Maracyn and Maracyn 2 with no problem (other than a bit of clouding in the water.) The only things I use half strength (or less) are Bettafix/Melafix and Pimafix since they are oils and at full strength they would make it hard for a betta to breathe.
