I posted pictures of ray on this forum that you can view.

i have had ray for a while now, and lately he has been lethargic. he is usually very active and cocky. he would usually sleep on the bottom but he has been sitting on the bottom and rarely swimming around. i haven't been around him much lately i think he might be depressed, because i don't interact with him anymore. His tail has turned red as if another fish had been attacking him but he is in his own 2 gal bowl. GillMan has changed his water and i am hoping that was the issue. Im not sure if he has a parasite or illness.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice.

He could just be getting old. Any guess at an age? It's typical for them to only live 2 to 3 years.

he's not that old to the best of my knowledge. I got him a couple months ago, my sister had gotten him that day and i took him home.

He could be nipping at his own tail. Sometimes when a Betta is stressed they will do this, not sure why though?!
Have you got a heater in the tank and what temperature is it set at?
Also, have you any plants or ornaments in the tank?

Yeah maybe a new plant and rock might be nice for him to look at. Does he have a bit of variation in his diet with some frozen food as well as flakes? Where does he get his surname from?

How much of his tail is turning red and is it spreading? You could have a nasty case of fin rot and if it's particularly fast spreading, the bacteria may be making him not feel so well.

There have been a lot of posts with quick acting fin rot lately. Our betta had it and spent most of his time on the bottom - only coming up for air.

Have you added anything new to the tank lately like a filter, etc.?

What do you use in your tank water?

You know how people bite their nails when they are nervous or stressed maybe its the same thing with bettas? :shifty: we'll never know.

Gone red makes me think of finrot too. I'd treat for it either way.
Did he come from an lfs? Sometimes the bettas they get in are not youngsters. In fact most of them aren't! So he may be older then you think sadly.
Hope he gets better soon.
